Cobra Kai Ending with Season 6 Wasn’t Netflix’s Call, Says Creator

Following the news of the end in January 2023, Karate Kid fans took to social media to blame Netflix for yet another fantastic show leaving the streaming platform. But Cobra Kai creator Jon Hurwitz has now come clean and stated that Netflix did not decide to end the legacy spinoff with season 6; the showrunners did.

After a great five-season run, the show’s writers announced the show is set to return to Netflix with the sixth and final season soon. Now the show’s creator has explained how they decided to end the show on their own terms rather than overstay their welcome. Netflix didn’t tell us it was the last season. We told them it was the last season. We’ve always wanted to end Cobra Kai on our own terms, and we are grateful we have the opportunity to do so. But that doesn’t mean we’re finished with the Miyagiverse. We love this world.

While it is sad that we won’t be seeing any more of Ralph Macchio and William Zabka in their legendary roles after season 6, Cobra Kai’s creator has promised that this isn’t the end of the Miyagiverse.

The legacy that Daniel and Johnny have created with their dojos and students will carry on and, hopefully, result in more spinoffs featuring the many interesting characters introduced or brought back in the show.

The showrunners have a whole season to tie up pre-existing plotlines and deliver an emotional finale, allowing the show’s fandom to say goodbye to the characters they’ve come to love. Season 6 will feature Kreese looking for revenge, the Seikai Taikai, a Chozen-Kumiko romance, and possibly the identity of Tory’s parents.

About Cobra Kai

Cobra Kai is an action drama that is a reboot/sequel of The Karate Kid movies. It premiered on YouTube in 2018, and subsequently moved to Netflix. The series stars Ralph Macchio, William Zabka, Xolo Maridueña, Tanner Buchanan, Courtney Henggeler and Mary Mouser.

When Johnny Lawrence opens the Cobra Kai dojo to teach his bullied teenage neighbor, Miguel, how to defend himself, his age-old rivalry with Daniel LaRusso is ignited once more. Will their rivalry continue to affect their present lives and those they love, or will they be able to bury the past?
