The Activision Blizzard deal has been a hot topic in the gaming community for a long time, with Microsoft going back and forth between different countries to approve the merger. But 2 days ago, we finally learned that the United Kingdom’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has blocked the Activision Blizzard acquisition.
This decision comes after almost sixteen months of Microsoft trying to approve the merger. Their reasons for blocking the acquisition are apparently based on cloud gaming and Nintendo Switch’s technical performance. CMA took this decision based on the grounds of providing a fairer ground for cloud gaming.
The CMA’s decision on the Activision Blizzard deal was rejected by many cloud gaming providers & they expressed their disapproval through social media platforms. GeForce NOW, NVIDIA’s cloud gaming service and other cloud gaming providers took to Twitter to express their disapproval.
GeForce NOW allows to play supported games on any devices including mobile devices and Smart TVs, etc. They tweeted, stating that the merger will only allow themselves and other cloud gaming providers to gain an even deeper catalog of games, which is why they don’t stand with the decision.

Many other people, other than cloud gaming providers, have also been very vocal about the matter. Basically, the thing is, the acquisition would’ve made Activision’s Call of Duty titles more accessible on Cloud, so the decision doesn’t make any sense in a way. But the deal was dismissed by the CMA, due to the Switch’s “technical incapability” for running Call of Duty games.
The story is far from over, as Microsoft and Activision Blizzard have already begun to appeal. Whether the CMA’s stance on the merger changes or remains the same is something we have to wait and see. For now, the deal has been blocked by the CMA.
