Chris Evans explains why Sam Wilson, aka Falcon, played by Anthony Mackie, is the right choice to be Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Evans spent nearly a decade playing Steve Rogers in the MCU. But he made his exit from the shared universe with Avengers: Endgame. The film’s climax saw Steve hand over the Captain America shield to Falcon, gesturing that he will be the MCU’s new Captain America.
Marvel Cinematic Universe celebrity Chris Evans recently shared his perspective on who he thinks should hold Captain America’s shield in the upcoming Marvel series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
Evans talked about how Falcon’s “role within the Marvel universe has answered the call to action” to Variety. “He’s proven his courage, loyalty, and reliability over multiple films,” he added. “Sam has given so much, and he’s also lost a lot too. He believes in something bigger than himself, and that type of humility is necessary to carry the shield.”
The actor also remembered working on set with Anthony Mackie, sharing some of his co-star’s phrases. One of the most remarkable ones being “Mackie-isms”. According to Evans, when the director would call cut on a scene, Mackie would acknowledge saying, “Cut the check!”. “This phrase will forever be associated with Mackie,” Evans said. “I find myself saying it on sets all the time. I love it. But I’ll never be able to say it as well as him.”
Meanwhile, when Mackie was asked if the Falcon would be the new Captain America, he replied in the negative,
“No, we don’t know that yet. The show, the idea of the show [referring to The Falcon and the Winter Soldier] is basically…
At the end of Avengers: Endgame, Cap decided he was going into retirement and he asked me if I would take up the shield, but at no point in time, did I agree to or say that I would be Captain America.”

However, Evans’ perception of why Sam Wilson is an able successor to Steve Rogers is outstanding. Bucky (a super-soldier) is closer to fitting Steve’s physical abilities. However, he’s still a former assassin who is trying to reclaim his identity.
On the other hand, Sam was right by Steve’s side throughout most of Phases 2 and 3. He has repeatedly illustrated the qualities anyone would want in Captain America. The series The Falcon and The Winter Soldier would be engaging indeed, as the story is predicted to revolve around Sam discovering he’s more than worthy to carry the shield next.
Sam fulfilling MCU’s new Captain America role would apparently set him up for a crucial role in Phase 4 and beyond. It has been reported that Evans will be back as Captain America, even though he has denied it. It will be intriguing to see what happens with the mantle and shield in case Chris Evans returns.
