Chibi Maruko-chan has been airing since the late 1990s. All of us remember the nostalgia it evokes, the cute pastel neighborhoods, the daily life portrayals and the troubles that Maruko always seemed to cause.
Episodes of the anime have accompanied us all through our childhood and although we have moved on to fancier anime, we never forgot about Maruko-chan.
The broadcast of the anime had been stopped from 3rd May due to the coronavirus threat. The safety of the cast and staff was kept in mind and previous episodes were being re-aired.
However, good news awaits, as the anime episodes of Chibi Maruko-chan will start broadcasting new episodes starting 21st June. The 30th anniversary of the anime was celebrated in January this year. New episodes will be aired from 21st June to 23rd August .
The new episodes originate from the stories by Sakura Momoko (the deceased author of Chibi Maruko-chan) which were never adapted into the anime. The new episode broadcast announcement was made by the official website of Chibi Maruko-chan anime.
The episodes which will be aired in the 10 weeks are as follows
- 21st June, “Maruko, chased by Nora dog”
- 28th June, “Let’s go to the teacher’s house”
- 5th July, “Come on”, “Dad go to Hokkaido”
- 12th July, “Maruko Great Panic”
- 19th July, “Maruko wants star sand”, “A white ant is in my house!”
- 26th July, “Yochan’s girlfriend”
- 2nd August, “Maruko and Bargain Advertisement “
- 9th August, “I’m Happy”
- 16th August, “Noisy Mosquitoes”
- 23rd August, Fireworks at Tomoegawa”
Sakura Momoko, the creator of Chibi Maruko-chan, passed away due to breast cancer at an age of 53 in August 2018. The fruits of her labour have not been forgotten.
The anime first ran from 1990-1992 and the ongoing anime was first aired in 1995. Sakura’s wish to further publish the manga is being fulfilled by Sakura Productions, which has staff who have been past assistants to Sakura Momoko.
About Maruko-chan
Chibi Maruko-chan manga was created by Momoko Sakura and serialized in Shueisha’s Ribon magazine from 1986-1996. It’s ongoing anime adaptation was first aired in 1995.
The story revolves around Maruko-chan, an elementary school student who lives in suburban Japan. She is a huge troublemaker and the plot follows her everyday life. Some of the scenes have been adopted from Sakura’s own life.
