Here’s a Very Early Look at Dead Space Remake Courtesy EA

In July, the announcement of a Dead Space Remake was met with a lot of joy from fans of the iconic sci-fi horror franchise.

The remake, which will completely rebuild the first installment of the game trilogy for current-gen consoles, is about a year into development and does not have a release date yet.

However, developer EA Motive shared an extremely early look at the game in a Twitch livestream earlier today. Now, fair warning, it’s a very early look, so there’s no gameplay and no teaser or trailer.

It’s just a peek at where the game is in development, and seeing that is pretty cool in itself.

Hosted by senior producer Philippe Ducharme and creative director Roman Campos-Oriola, the “unorthodox” livestream saw the duo spilling on the studio’s approach with the ground-up remake of the beloved game.

One thing that’s important for us…it’s not about one thing.

It’s really about improving on a lot of different elements to create that original but still new experience.

We want to make sure we stay true to the original.

Devs will have help on this front: Gunnar Wright, who voiced protagonist Isaac Clarke in the original game, will reprise his role as the plasma-cutting spaceman in the remake.

Furthermore, the game’s “cut off their limbs” feature, which has always been a hallmark of the series, will maintain its place in the game.

While the fundamental elements of the story will remain the same, EA plans to build more on top of the series’ blueprint.

In the story, engineer Isaac Clarke’s girlfriend Nicole Brennan has been radio silent for a while, so he sets out to find her. But to his shock, he finds her mining ship, the USG Ishimura, overrun by Necromorphs, i.e., space zombies with giant scythes for arms.

With new incorporations, EA Motive plans to create a stronger link between the game’s narrative and the Dead Space universe through audio logs and other forms of world-building.

These might give us deeper insights into how the outbreak happened and maybe even hints to help us find Nicole.

Another important detail that EA Motive shared was that Isaac would not be a silent character this time around, unlike the game’s 2008 version.

Clarke will have more agency in the story but won’t break immersion by talking aloud in quiet areas –  he will only speak when spoken to and speak where it feels natural to respond.

On the gameplay front, EA Motive revealed that to create a more intense and immersive experience, the team plans to make traversing the USG Ishimura “fully seamless” and “unbroken,” with no cuts or loading.

Very God of War (2018), and seeing how Motive plans to build the game on EA’s latest Frostbite engine, this feat shouldn’t be too difficult to pull off.

Ducharme and Campos-Oriola concluded the livestream with one important announcement: Dead Space Remake will have no bothersome microtransactions. So, if you were worried that EA would throw those into the game, worry no more.

Dead Space is under development for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.

About Dead Space Remake

6Dead Space Remake is the next-gen remake of the 2008 sci-fi action horror franchise developed by Visceral Games and published by Electronic Arts. The Remake is being handled by EA Motive and is set to feature various upgrades to the visuals, sound, and gameplay.

Dead Space follows the story of Isaac Clarke, an engineer on board an intergalactic mining ship called the USSG Ishimura. On discovering an ancient artifact known as The Marker, the ship is overrun by a species of aliens called Necromorphs. With the aliens turning the crew into one of their own, Isaac must fight through the hordes as he tries to find a way to get back to Earth.

The gameplay is reminiscent of the Resident Evil franchise, with inventory management being a key component. Players have access to a variety of mining tools that become weapons and must navigate the claustrophobic corridors of the Ishimura while fighting off the Necromorphs.
