Summary:
- In Rebel Moon: Part 1, many character’s backstories were left out in the PG-13 version.
- In the novelization, Admiral Atticus has a much more darker opening compared to the PG-13 version.
- Aris has a more central role in the extended cut along with Kora and Balisarious.
Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon – Part 1: A Child of Fire is a Star War-esque saga that spans 3 hours and has gotten an ‘R’ rating due to its exaggerated violent scenes. However, Netflix has decided to release a two-hour PG-13 version first, leaving out many character’s backstories and motivations.
This version is facing a lot of criticism because of the awkward cuts deployed to navigate through the R-rated violence and maintain the PG-13 rating.
‘The character development in Rebel Moon feels very choppy and rushed at times. While prominent characters like Kora (Sofia Boutella) and Balisarius (Fra Fee) get more development, peripherals like Nemesis (Bae Doona) are suddenly introduced without any significant backstory.
Additional details on these characters will be introduced in the sequel, Rebel Moon-Part 2: The Scargiver, which is supposed to come out before Part 1’s extended cut arrives.
Moreover, Rebel Moon-Part 1: A Child of Fire novelization follows the same script as the extended cut. So, if you are too curious, read the official novelization to know everything about the first part!
Many characters in Rebel Moon – Part 1: A Child of Fire receive hasty introductions and unfinished character arcs. However, that doesn’t mean that the extended cut will fix everything.
Most of the backstories will form the backbone of Rebel Moon – Part 2: The Scargiver. Therefore, even the novelization runs thin on spilling all the secrets of many important characters.
1. Admiral Atticus Gets an Alternate Opening in the Extended Cut
Admiral Atticus Noble (Ed Skrein) is a spine-chilling villain, and his new opening scene in the extended cut of Rebel Moon – Part 1: A Child of Fire will show you why. The official novelization describes how he massacres an entire planet and its royal family for defying him. It happens before he comes to Veldt for grain, making his appearance even more dreadful.
Moreover, Noble gets a detailed backstory in the extended version, like his hookah addiction and relationship with a tentacled creature shown in the PG-13 cut. The PG-13 cut only hinted at it, but the extended cut will leave nothing to the imagination, using the R-rating to the fullest.
2. Aris is a Lot More Essential Than You Thought
Aris is a valiant Imperium soldier on Veldt who saved Sam and Jim from Kora in the granary, and he has a lot more significance in the PG-13 cut than in the novels. This is because he is the only son of the king whom the Noble kills.
In the extended cut, Aris survives the Imperium massacre and joins forces with Sam and Jimmy. Moreover, he will also fight alongside them to protect Veldt from Noble’s invasion in the sequel, Rebel Moon – Part 2: The Scargiver.
3. Jimmy has an Entirely New Subplot in Rebel Moon’s Extended Cut
In the PG-13 cut of Rebel Moon, Kora, and Gunner go off to recruit allies while Jimmy stays behind on Veldt. However, they see a paradigm shift in Jimmy when they come back. Jimmy now has an antlered headpiece with a cape and a staff. In the cut version, the entire transformation process is a mystery.
This will be answered by Zack Snyder’s extended version, where he’ll show how Jimmy leaves the village and wanders off looking for a purpose.
Suddenly, he stumbles upon a dead deer and has a life-changing epiphany. Jimmy realizes that he is more than a machine. He is a free spirit!
4. Kora’s Backstory will be Much More Detailed!
Kora is a character who gets more development than anyone in Rebel Moon – Part 1: A Child of Fire. However, the novelization provides even more details and we hope to see the same being adapted for the small screen in 2024’s extended cut.
For instance, we know from the PG-13 version that Kora has a role in assassinating the king, queen, and princess Issa. However, the novelization explicitly states that Kora, or Arthelais, killed the royal family in cold blood. Therefore, there is a much more complicated backstory of Kora that is yet to unfold.
5. Balisarious is Way Worse than is Shown in the PG-13 Cut
Finally, Balisarious gets a lot more development in the novelization than in the Pg-13 version of Rebel Moon – Part 1: A Child of Fire.
He is a mystery that will unravel in Rebel Moon – Part 2: The Scargiver. Moreover, we will get to see a lot more of him when Snyder’s extended cut comes out!
