Towards the end of the Wano arc, everyone and their mothers expected either Eustass Kidd or Trafalgar Law to join Luffy to fill the Yonko spots left after the defeat of Big Mom and Kaido.
But since Oda-sensei is Oda-sensei, fans kind of expected something bigger coming soon. However, nobody, and I mean nobody, expected BUGGY of all people to be the Fourth Emperor of the Sea.
Even before the chapter was officially released, the memes were already flooding the internet. Some accepted it as a joke by the leakers to gain clout, while others just accepted it out of pure shock.
The latest chapter (chapter 1056) gives us a few hints on how Buggy might have become a Yonko.
Buggy’s Rise to Fame
When Buggy the Clown was first introduced in Orange Town, fans expected him to be a one-off character like most of the antagonists of the East Blue saga.
However, over the years, he has risen to extreme heights of power, holding many reputed positions along the way.
Initially, Buggy was just the captain of a small crew called the Buggy Pirates. After meeting Alvida, they both formed the Buggy and Alvida Alliance.
Soon after entering the Grand Line, Buggy was captured by the Marines and sent to the Impel Down prison.
While escaping the prison, Buggy set loose many of the captive prisoners to create chaos and shield him from the jailers and Blugoris. However, he didn’t know how much respect they would appreciate his actions.
During this time, he also met Galdino, a.k.a. Mr.3, who offered his help to break out of the prison.
The freed prisoners’ admiration for Buggy grew even more after learning that he was a member of the Roger Pirates.
Although the amount of praise he received was definitely overrated, Buggy enjoyed being in the spotlight, so he kept up the charade.
Buggy went on to become a Warlord of the Sea and established a mercenary dispatch service called Buggy’s Delivery along with the former Buggy Pirates, Alvida, Galdino, and the prisoners from Impel Down.
After the defeat of Kaido and Big Mom, Buggy was given the title of Yonko along with the infamous Monkey D. Luffy.
The Cross Guild
Chapter 1056 shows us Yonko Buggy’s new organization called the Cross Guild. The most interesting reveal along with this is the fact that Sir Crocodile and Dracule Mihawk are both part of the group under Buggy.
How Buggy was able to recruit two of the strongest former Warlords of the Sea is still unknown, but there might be more here than what meets the eye.
Although Buggy has gained such a prestigious title, he is still the same cowering clown. His main strength lies in his charisma and power of persuasion.
It would be more fitting to assume that the Cross Guild was Crocodile’s idea instead. He could also be the one to convince Mihawk to be the head of the whole thing, while Buggy remains as the face of it.
This way, Buggy can benefit from all the attention while Mihawk gains access to Buggy’s strong subordinates to use against the World Government and Marines.
Crocodile, on the other hand, could benefit by filling the gap left by Doflamingo as the new head of the underworld. With all the attention on Buggy, Crocodile can go about his criminal business without a bother.
Regardless of what exactly they gain from the partnership, its best to expect everyone has their own secret motives at play.
Why Buggy instead of Kid or Law?
Being a Yonko needs more than just being an infamous pirate with a high bounty. Eustass Kid and Trafalgar Law were not given the title of Yonko because they lacked the large territory and fleets Yonkos are known to possess.
Meanwhile, Buggy already has a large workforce in Buggy’s Delivery organization which mostly consists of powerful warriors and pirates that he would send to clients.
His new group already has some big names like Crocodile, Mihawk, Alvida, Mr.3 – Galdino, Mohji, Cabaji, Richie, and a ton of Impel Down escapees as well as other pirates and criminals.
Knowing Buggy, he might also have his own territory in the New World. He also might have large treasure reserves thanks to his organization’s profits and the treasure of Captain John.
So even though Kid and Law are some of the strongest pirates in the Grand Line, they are still outclassed in terms of crew strength and political control by the great clown Buggy.
If “fake it till you make it” had a face, it would surely be Buggy.
