CBS Announces NCIS’ Renewal: Gala Day for the Seasoned Fans

CBS has made an exciting announcement regarding the future of the NCIS franchise. Although a spinoff of the series was recently canceled, NCIS has remained a highly regarded procedural drama on CBS.

The show initially began as a spinoff of the legal drama JAG and follows the work of special agents within the Naval Criminal Investigative Service as they investigate various criminal cases.

In fact, alongside other notable shows like CSI and Criminal Minds, NCIS is regarded as one of CBS’ most iconic procedural dramas, which has led to the creation of multiple spinoffs.

Recently, CBS has brought good news for the fans of the franchise. The studio has revealed that NCIS and NCIS: Hawai’i have been renewed for seasons 21 and 3, respectively.

Read what CBS Entertainment President Amy Reisenbach wrote about it:

This season, CBS is continuing its winning tradition, delivering an unparalleled combination of top returning series and new hit shows that are entertaining huge audiences on both broadcast and streaming. It is a testament to the stellar work being done by our best-in-class talent in front of and behind the camera that we have had yet another exceptional season, and I know we will only continue to build on this foundation of outstanding programming as we look ahead toward next fall.

NCIS: Los Angeles

The confirmation for the renewals came shortly after CBS announced the conclusion of NCIS: Los Angeles after season 14.

The seasoned viewers have been adapting to the absence of Mark Harmon’s, Jethro Gibbs from the primary NCIS show, and Gary Cole taking up the lead role.

Although the shift in lead actors has occurred, NCIS has managed to maintain steady viewership ratings, while NCIS: Los Angeles has experienced a moderate, yet not alarming, decrease.

The main NCIS series is still going strong and currently holds the third-place spot for longest-running primetime drama series in the U.S., falling just short of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and Law & Order.

This season, the Navy crime drama has surpassed the beloved Western TV series Gunsmoke in seasons aired. Unfortunately, Gunsmoke was cut short after 20 seasons without a proper finale.

In addition to breaking a major record, the NCIS renewals demonstrate CBS’ continued confidence in the franchise, despite the recent cancellations of NCIS: Los Angeles and New Orleans.

With plans for an Australian-set spinoff and successful crossover events, the series has no plans to slow down.

Fans can catch new episodes of NCIS season 21 on Mondays at 9 p.m. EST, followed by NCIS: Hawai’i.
