For those of you who did not revisit the entire Euphoria season 1 and the two bridge episodes after season trailer was out, here’s a quick recap before season 2 premieres.
We left off Rue and Jules’ love story in 2019, when the world was, well, the “old normal.”
After the “new normal” arrived, the show will arrive the wake of a global pandemic, an Emmy for it lead Zendaya and two beautiful bridge episodes for Rue and Jules.
Rue: Troubled Times Are Back
Rue’s journey came back a full circle, albeit in a bit more deadly manner, towards the end of season 1. She was introduced as the teen-addict searching for drugs and who falls head over heels for the new girl, Jules. The only one who could keep her sober was the love of her life.
Things go astray with her yet-no-labeled relationship with Jules – Rue believes Jules “abandoned” her by leaving the town on her own, whereas running away was Rue’s impulsive idea. In a way, Rue “abandons” Jules as she doesn’t go to the train station after Nate pins her down with her insecurities.
The stunning, most heartbreaking finale saw Rue relapsing in the worst ways. The bridge episode in __ saw Rue in conversation with sponsor Ali, to who she admits that she’s having suicidal thoughts.
However, the bridge ends with Rue getting a push towards a more spiritual perspective of her life.
Will she and Jules work their mess out? Will Rue finally find a reason other than drugs to stay alive?
Jules: Won’t F*ck Any Slob No More
For reasons we knew and didn’t, the town was nothing but hell for Jules. Besides Rue, of course. The events of season 1 made Jules more assertive, more courageous. Constant bullying and blackmail from Nate and a f*c-anything-that’s-not-a-slob attitude took a considerable toll on her tender soul.
However, in the bridge episode, Jules’ struggle with her sexuality takes a more decisive turn. Talking to her therapist, she realizes how most of her perception of femininity comes from the male perspective. In a bid to change that, she now wants to get off the hormone replacement pills and be herself on her terms.
I always thought feminine cant be big and broad. But the ocean is big and broad. And there’s nothing more feminine than the ocean
Jules
But we know the calm wont last long. The bridge episode also reveals how Rue wasn’t the only drug addict in Jules’ life. Jules had a similar relationship with her mother, who was recovering from addiction but later relapsed. She reveals to the therapist that the thought of being responsible for someone’s sobriety was too heavy a burden to be carried.
There’s is the most peculiar love story and I for one cannot wait to see its next chapter.
The rest of the Euphoria teen gang
Maddy was still stuck in a toxic, abusive relationship with Nate the last time we saw her. Nate’s sexuality is also not helping her case. Maddy has seen Cal (Nate’s father) having sex with Jules on one of his voyeuristic tapes. So, there is a chance her hopeless romantic love for Nate may fade after all.
Meanwhile, Nate continues to be one of the most evil characters I’ve seen on screen in a while. Struggling with anger and daddy issues, he catfishes women, sexually harasses them, thrashes the man Maddy dates, and blackmails Jules to the point she runs away.
Queen KitKat journeys from the-friendly-neighborhood-girl to making fame the OnlyFans way after her sex tape is leaked. However, she turns good by the show’s end when she admits to being insecure and jealous to Ethan. That kiss tho!
Then there’s former skateboard champ Cassie, who’s in a complicated relationship with college boy McKay. Cassie gets pregnant, and McKay tells her to get an abortion, which she does in one of the most badass sequences on what goes on in a women’s head. Meanwhile, Fez, the drug dealer, is in big trouble as police raids his house. What doesn’t help is his rivalry with Nate.
So there you have it. Let’s watch Euphoria season 2 then, shall we?
