It’s time to float with Pennywise the Clown again! The haunting tale of the little town of Derry, based on Stephen King’s 1986 novel, was first adapted on screen by Andy Muschietti. You must remember the 2017 and 2019 films, It and It Chapter Two, and the tale of seven teens and adults who faced the killer clown twice in three decades.
But in March 2022, rumors of a prequel series started to float, and HBO confirmed that they and WB TV are moving forward with Welcome to Derry in February 2023. Jason Fuchs, an executive producer for the films, and Muschietti’s screenplay will inspire the series, with Fuchs and Brad Caleb Kane serving as showrunners.
Until now, the confirmation and the official synopsis were all we had. But HBO has finally attached four members to the developing series! Before that, let me give you the film’s synopsis:
Set in the world of Stephen King’s ‘It’ universe, ‘Welcome to Derry’ is based on King’s ‘It’ novel and expands the vision established by filmmaker Andy Muschietti in the feature films ‘It’ and ‘It Chapter Two.’
Jovan Adepo (Babylon), Chris Chalk (Godzilla VS Kong), Taylour Paige (Zola), and James Remar (Dexter) are confirmed to star in the prequel, but their roles have not been disclosed. Considering the show will be set in the 1960s before the events of It, it’s safe to expect a whole new roster of characters.
Bill Skarsgård recently revealed that he doesn’t plan to return to the role of the psychotic clown again, so that’s a downer. But I have to encourage you to be open to this change, no matter how much you think that the John Wick 4 actor was the perfect Pennywise.
The prequel will likely feature a slightly different incarnation or version of Pennywise, but that will just be a new angle to the fascinating world of Stephen King’s It. We’ll just have to wait for more information from the studio or the show’s crew about what to expect from the prequel.
