After the death of Mighty Thor in Thor: Love and Thunder, it seems like Thor’s mighty hammer, Mjolnir, has now come back to Thor. The God of Thunder was seen yielding Mjolnir once again in the final moments of Love and Thunder.
Thor: Love and Thunder marks the return of Dr. Jane Foster as the Mighty Thor, and she yields the mighty weapon of Thor, Mjolnir, in the movie. The hammer was previously destroyed by Thor’s sister, Hela, in Thor: Ragnarok (2017).
Ever since the loss of Mjolnir, he has been yielding Stormbreaker, one of the most powerful Asgardian weapons. However, throughout Love and Thunder, Thor keeps sulking about Mjolnir and saying that he wants it back. We even see Stormbreaker getting angry because of Thor’s obsession with Mjolnir.
With the return of Jane Foster, Mjolnir comes back to the MCU for good. After her death, Thor was able to take back Mjolnir again, while he passed on Stormbreaker to Love.
In the final moments of Love and Thunder, Thor uses Mjolnir once again and Love is seen yielding Stormbreaker. It seems like Mjolnir has now returned to Thor.
It might seem like Thor is losing out on his powers by giving up Stormbreaker, but there are various instances in the MCU that prove otherwise.
Firstly, it is Thor’s own powers that make him so powerful and the particular weapon he might be yielding at that point. For instance, in Ragnarok, Hela is able to break Mjolnir into pieces, since she was stronger than Thor.
Secondly, in Avengers: Infinity War, we see Thor using Stormbreaker to deflect Thanos’ attack. This could seem a good reason to consider Stormbreaker stronger than Mjolnir, but again, it was because of Thor’s own self-confidence and powers that he was able to deflect an attack involving all six Infinity stones.
Thirdly, going by the comics, the original owner of Stormbreaker was Beta Ray Bill. In one panel, Thor and Beta Ray Bill get into a fight, where Thor is able to destroy Stormbreaker into pieces using the Mjolnir alone.
All things considered, the power of a weapon depends on the individual yielding it, and not on the weapon alone. Since Thor himself has immense power, he will be able to channelize it through both Mjolnir and Stormbreaker.
Since the God of Thunder himself has a clear bias towards Mjolnir and desperately wanted it back, it will actually boost his confidence more if he is able to yield Mjolnir instead of Stormbreaker.
As such, in terms of strength, both Mjolnir and Stormbreaker are equally powerful weapons. If we have to consider one more powerful than the other, Mjolnir would win, since in a combat where the two hammers were against each other, Mjolnir won.
However, it still depends on the yielder as it is ultimately Thor’s own powers which gets channelized through the weapon that he uses at a particular instance.
As far as traveling between worlds is concerned, Thor is not losing out much there either. Since Odin is now dead, Thor is naturally the King and an Alfather. So, he most likely has the power to travel through worlds by default.
Besides, we saw Thor traveling through worlds using Zeus’ lightning bolt, so this power seems to be natural in Allfathers. Since Thor is Odin’s successor and an Allfather, he would naturally have the power to travel through worlds.
So, using Stormbreaker or Mjolnir won’t make much of a difference to his powers and abilities, except boost his confidence since he is now using a weapon of his choice.
As Odin himself once told Thor, “Are you Thor, the God of Hammers? Hmm? That hammer was to help you control your power, to focus it. It was never your source of strength.” He is after all, the God of Thunder, not the God of Hammers!
About Thor: Love and Thunder
