Mairimashita! Iruma-kun is an ongoing isekai series where the main character tries his best to blend in with the demons.
The entire series is built around this trope, with Iruma being set on a path to become the demon king while avoiding suspicion about the human blood flowing through his veins.
To help him with this task, he received a ring that helps him use magic and successfully deceive the rest. However, is this really all that Iruma has in his arsenal?
A large portion of the fandom believes that Iruma is capable of using magic without the ring, and theories concluding that possibility are abundant.
Furthermore, with the scenes in the manga portraying Iruma with wings, this belief has all but solidified.
1. Can Iruma Use Magic Without the Ring?
Iruma cannot use magic without the Ring of Gluttony due to his identity as a human. He can, however, produce a mildly similar effect on his own by using incantations and the power of his human blood.
The series has continued to assert that the only reason Iruma can use magic is due to the fact that he wields the Ring of Gluttony. Yet, as a human, Iruma himself has not even entertained the idea that he may have any magical energy of his own.
Despite this clearly laid fact, what confuses the audience is that Iruma successfully performed Sullivan’s forbidden spell at the entrance ceremony and summoned a familiar in Mr. Kallego’s class before he got the ring.
According to the fandom, these incidents can only be possible if,
- Iruma is indeed capable of using small amounts of magic without the ring, or,
- The author didn’t consider the logistics of this in the beginning since Iruma not having magic of his own is a huge plot point.
Many theories, such as Iruma being the actual grandson of Sullivan or the biological son of the Demon King, are popping up in support of the first option.
However, there’s a straightforward reason why he could perform those actions without any magic.
In both the previous incidents, Iruma could perform magic or imitate it in some form because of the spell’s nature.
In fiction, humans have often been capable of chanting incantations, and this may be how his parents got into contact with Sullivan in the first place.
Another cause might be that the energy required for that particular spell isn’t drawn from an internal mana pool but by tapping into the land of the demons themselves.
The latter would explain why Iruma could perform it and why a misfire’s consequences are particularly fatal.
Ultimately, Iruma can not use magic on his own. He is only capable of replicating magic by channeling Sullivan’s energy stored in the Ring of Gluttony.
2. Does Iruma Have Wings? Can He Fly?
Iruma does not have wings of his own since he is a human. However, with the help of Arikured and the Ring of Gluttony’s magic, Iruna can manifest wings temporarily. Nevertheless, he still can not fly using them.
Iruma has to blend in with the other demons successfully, but being a wingless human makes that problematic. In volume 8 of the manga, he was nearly caught by Shichiro, who could not feel wings on Iruma’s back.
Fortunately, when the staff lifted his shirt to see for themselves, Arikured morphed his hand to make it look like Iruma had tiny wings.
With this cover, the teachers were convinced that Shichiro could not feel his student’s wings because of their size.
Iruma also manifested wings in chapter 34 during the Battlers Presentation when he used the Pandoroola mode to break through Kirio’s barrier.
This happened once again when training with Bachiko. However, unlike the last incident, the wings and the bow sprouted this time due to Iruma’s desire to fit in.
To conclude, Iruma can sprout wings with the help of Arikured, especially when he is using a significant amount of magic. However, he does not have biological wings of his own and can not fly due to this reason.
