The setting for the 2021 edition of Call of Duty has been under speculation for a while now. Earlier this week, reports began circulating that Sledgehammer Games’ follow-up to Treyarch’s Black Ops Cold War is going to be called ‘Call of Duty WWII: Vanguard’ and will take players back to the dark and uncertain times of the 1940s.
This report was based on an update from ModernWarzone, a portal which has a pretty great track record in terms of credible Call of Duty news and leaks.
Now, a new report from Eurogamer has confirmed that the new Call of Duty will indeed take players to the frontlines of World War 2 and that WWII: Vanguard is, at the moment, a working title. However, the British gaming site also added that Activision plans to continue with the Vanguard subtitle for the final version.
In addition to the info disclosed above, Eurogamer also debunked ModernWarzone’s earlier claim that Vanguard will take place in an alternate timeline where WW2 didn’t end in 1945 and went till the 1950s. In short, Vanguard will have a traditional WW2 setting and no 1950s hijinks.
The next concern, of course, is what kind of an impact will Vanguard have on Call of Duty: Warzone. Previously, Black Ops Cold War was announced within Warzone, and while its integration into the battle royale was far from smooth, the announcement did wonders for the sales of Treyarch’s release. With a nuked out zombie outbreak on the cards for Warzone that is set to bring an 80s themed lift to Verdansk, it’s possible that a brand new WW2-themed map could be coming to the game with WW2 weapons in tow.
This will be Sledgehammer’s second outing in a World War 2 set-up after 2017’s tremendously successful Call of Duty: WWII. The game generated over $1 billion in revenue worldwide by the end of the year and was the highest-grossing console game in North America at the time.
As of writing time, we’re currently on March 27. Updates and new announcements for Call of Duty usually come out during April/May so watch this space for more news on your favourite first-person shooter.
