One executive from Microsoft’s recently acquired Activision has been infamous for her previous jibes at Sony and has made headlines again over the same Call of Duty deal.
This comes in response to Sony claiming that Microsoft would ruin the much-loved Call of Duty franchise and, in turn, PlayStation’s reputation by releasing buggy game versions for the console.
Activision’s Executive VP of Corporate Affairs, Lulu Cheng Meservy responded by questioning Sony’s reluctance to accept a fair deal that Microsoft has had with Activision and Nintendo. She recalls how SIE’s CEO Jim Ryan said “”I don’t want a new Call of Duty deal. I just want to block your merger” in a closed-door meeting in Brussels.
While Lulu Cheng Meservy is a controversial figure on Twitter, as a Microsoft executive, she is privy to the proceedings in the regulatory courts.
From Jim Ryan’s comments, it’s pretty clear that Sony wants to stonewall the proceedings and not let it go forward. Despite an offer by Microsoft for a 10-year deal on the table, Sony has not signed the license yet.
Microsoft has agreed on terms for a similar tenure with both Nintendo and Nvidia to pressure Sony to agree to similar terms.
From the filing with UK’s Competition and Markets Authority, it has been reported that the regulatory body is looking to approve the $68.7 billion deal. This is probably due to the concerns being eased by the deals struck with Nvidia and Nintendo.
While Sony’s stance is being questioned by many gamers, it is also true that Microsoft’s recent trend of acquiring third-party studios is also concerning. They’re establishing monopoly which players are worried about.
Sony’s also does not want to lose out on potential revenue from the Call of Duty series through the PlayStation platform to its biggest competitor, Xbox. Things are bound to get interesting, irrespective of the ruling from UK’s CMA. ‘
