Butcher, a pixel art 2D shooter inspired by DOOM and Contra, is now free for keeps on GOG for a limited time!
The game may seem like some kind of Contra rip-off at first glance, and while it does take some levels of inspiration from that great franchise, trust me, Butcher is much more than that. Oh, and it’s extremely brutal and gory.
The game takes a lot of inspiration from DOOM as well, with the player being a Cyborg sent to Earth to destroy all remaining human life. Yeah, I don’t think you play as the hero in this game.
Not to mention, everything in this game just bleeds upon contact. The game is super gory in that regard, with everything nearly exploding into bits when the Cyborg uses his lethal weaponry and break all hell loose.
Here’s a trailer to give you an idea of what I’m talking about:
But, upon going a little beyond the goriness, swearing, and violence, you’ll find a gem of a shooter that may look simple at first glance but is actually hard as nails where players can look forward to a fast, reflex-oriented shooting experience.
Anyhow, if you ever wanted to experience what it’s like to play DOOM in 2D, place your bets on Butcher. With 20 levels, a lot (By that, I mean a LOT) of weaponry, and simply being a game where you can essentially paint the walls of your screen red with blood, I don’t see why you shouldn’t give this one a try. It’ll most certainly prove to be a fantastic, albeit harrowing experience!
The game is free on GOG as it is being given away as part of its Made in Poland sale. However, the offer is quickly fading away, with only a day’s time left before it disappears, so grab a copy of the game while you still can!
