3. Recap of Episode 11

I. Prison Break

Episode 11, titled “Beyond the Pale of Vengeance,” begins with Akutagawa waking up in the empty rift with the authors who couldn’t reincarnate, the blue flame tells them he cannot allow them to reincarnate. 

The Taint Akutagawa appears from the fire warning them they will stay there forever. Soon he leaves after showing his face, and the authors try to find a way out of the rift.

As Akutagawa tells this story to Dazai and the cat, the Taint Akutagawa is overtaken by the internal force and gets out of his cell.

In the library, he stares at Akutagawa Ryunosuke’s book “Gears,” but Hori takes it away. He summons his weapons and attacks them to get the book back. When faced with the real Akutagawa, he ultimately gets consumed by the flames.

II. A Friend’s Failure

Dazai stops him, and taint Akutagawa is reminded not to let the uncontrollable Taint hurt his friends. Kan Kikuchi puts the unconscious Akutagawa to bed, and the Taint Akutagawa gets locked up again.

Despite Dazai’s protests, Kikuchi suggests they must deal with the Taint while he is calm, but Oda Saku convinces them that he was the Akutagawa they knew, he was stopping the Taint from spreading in the books.

After Dazai pleads them, the authors try to find a solution for the two Akutagawas situations. But Kan refuses to listen to them; he blames himself for Akutagawa’s suicide in real life.

Authors who side with Kikuchi express regret on not being there for Akutagawa in his difficult times.

III. The self he created to comfort himself.

Dazai visits Taint Akutagawa in lock-up; the others decide to get rid of the Taint the next day to protect Akutagawa’s books.

They enter the book “Beyond the Pale of Vengeance,” one of Kan’s most famous works. A brief narration of the original story is given, when Ken tries to execute the Taint Akutagawa, Dazai and his friends appear to save him.

Fake or not, Dazai and the others cannot forget that he saved them. They fight amongst themselves.

The taint voice inside him approaches the Akutagawa, who watches them; the voice tells him to remember his birth’s meaning! Akutagawa is forced to recall the void created in him when he was alive, and he lost interest in his books.

The books which reached fame weren’t the books he wanted to write, but “A Road Through the Dark Night,” was the one but because of the people around him who didn’t wish Akutagawa to change his style made him tired of writing, of living. That is when Akutagawa created another self within, due to his suffering.

Initially, the Japanese literature themed DMM online game known as Bungou to Alchemist, shortly known as BunAru.

Bungou to Alchemist was launched on November 1, 2016, by DMM GAMES as a browser game, expanding to mobile platforms the following year on June 14.

Through the years, the franchise has expanded into novels, stage plays, and even anime. The protagonist is taken to a world where they can meet renowned Japanese writers of the past.
