Recap of Episode 1
The episode starts with a flashback of a young Fukuzawa telling the military police that he will work alone from now on. He comes across a crime scene. Recognizing the victim, he goes to the office to find his secretary and gives him his condolences.
The secretary, arranging documents on the floor, tells him that he thinks that the murderer’s intent was to steal or destroy the documents, and thus he is arranging them in a particular pattern to catch him. Fukuzawa says that he was told that the victim was pushed out of the window.
The secretary, remarks how thankful he is for the dead president for taking him in, and wants to solve the crime. But fortunately, the secretary tells him that the assassin has already been captured and is apprehended next door.
Fukuzawa asks to see him and finds that he is the famous child assassin, who turned out to be a younger Oda Sakunosuke. He wonders how he was caught by some mere guards with his skills.
Suddenly, a young boy, Ranpo, walks in and demands to be given his permit. The secretary is puzzled by his appearance but realizes he is an interviewee that was supposed to come for an interview. Fukuzawa asks Ranpo how he will find his permit amidst all the documents. Ranpo tells him that his permit has got a thick stamp and is printed on heavy paper.
To the secretary’s horror, Ranpo goes and opens the window, causing all the other documents to fly away and leaving his document on the floor. As the secretary grumbles about finding the missing documents, Ranpo asks him why he is bothering as all the documents are there anyway since he is the killer and the assassin was detained as a scapegoat.
As Ranpo finishes telling his deduction, Oda realizes he was falsely detained and frees himself. Fukuzawa tries to stop him but he shoots the secretary before getting away.
Fukuzawa and Ranpo arrive at a restaurant and Fukuzawa comes to know that his parents are dead and he has gotten kicked out of all the places he earlier lived and worked since he always exposed the corruption behind his superiors. Fukuzawa gives him his card and tells him to contact him if he is in trouble.
Ranpo goes to the front desk and immediately calls him, saying he needs help since he doesn’t have a place to stay.
Fukuzawa brings Ranpo to his new job, a mystery at a theatre, and tells him to find work there since the theatre has been looking for staff. The theatre asked for Fukuzawa to arrest an attacker who has been sending death threats to the theatre.
Fukuzawa asks the owner to get Ranpo a job and she tells him he will evaluate him later. However, Ranpo gets annoyed asking why adults are always lying, and quickly analyzes her and tells Fukuzawa that she trusts neither him nor the police.
Fukuzawa and Ranpo go to meet the lead actor, Murakami Tokio. Fukuzawa asks him if there are parts where he is alone on the stage and he tells him that there are since he is the lead. Ranpo asks what the play is about. Murakami asks him if he hasn’t read the script. Ranpo comments that he found it boring and Murakami replies that if he thinks so, it must be true.
Fukuzawa and Ranpo go to meet the rest of the crew and they tell them that the threats are probably for Murakami since he is a womanizer and has had affairs. He probably has an enemy or two.
Ranpo complains that he is starving. Fukuzawa remarks that no one is taking the threat seriously. Ranpo comments that it is not a threat but a warning since a threat usually has consequences in return for not following through on a request and the theatre never got any kind of request. Fukuzawa is intrigued by Ranpo and thinks that he must see the truth.
He asks Ranpo why he didn’t tell her about the warning earlier and Ranpo replies he simply didn’t think Fukuzawa would misinterpret it. Fukuzawa realizes that Ranpo must believe that everyone notices details like he does. He tells him he will allow him to stay at his place. In return, Ranpo should tell him everything he has noticed about him.
Ranpo starts by deducing small details about him. Once he starts deducing his earlier job he was ashamed of, Fukuzawa shouts stop, which makes Ranpo fall down and he is shocked. Fukuzawa helps him up and tells him to help him with the current case, in return of which he will introduce more work to him and Ranpo agrees.
Fukuzawa and Ranpo arrive in front of the stage as the play is about to start and Fukuzawa wonders what he is doing since he already decided to work alone. Nonetheless, he prepares himself.
