After the events of the Lightfall DLC of Destiny 2, as per the lore, the Guardians and the Vanguard are clueless about the Witness’ location. They do not know how to follow the Witness’ as they enter the Traveler via the Veil.
Sloane, a long-forgotten-Guardian, resurfaces on Titan and helps the Guardians unveil the truth about the Witness through Ahsa, a psychic whale. What Ahsa revealed will roll back the years for the experienced players of the game.
As revealed by Ahsa, the Guardians will require Savathun’s help to fight the Witness. However, Bungie’s senior narrative designer Robert Brookes warned fans against jumping to the conclusion that Savathun will be an ally, given now she has the Light. He also added that the Hive committed much genocide across the galaxy, so it would be a difficult scenario to imagine.
Brookes mentioned that to look at the Hive from a different perspective would be a very tough task as they have a “lot of ground to cover to make amends for” their crimes against the galaxy.
Savathun, whose body has been in the possession of the Vanguard since the end of the Witch Queen, has to be resurrected to continue the pursuit of the Witness.
It is known that she has an innate hatred for the Witness and was also gifted the Light by the Traveler willingly. So, one can assume some common ground between the Witch Queen Savathun and her Light-Wielding Lucent Brood.
As per the lore, the reason for the genocide of galactic proportions for billions of years by the Hive Gods is because of a doctrine called “Sword Logic.” The “Witch Queen” campaign revealed that the Witness tricked the Hive Gods into believing that the Sword Logic was the path they were meant to follow.
At the end of the Witch Queen campaign, Savanthun becomes aware of the trickery. However, she is defeated by the Guardians by then, but her Ghost escapes before the Guardians take her Light power, hinting at a later return.
The fact that she is the Goddess of Deception thickens the lore even more. It will be interesting to see if former foes, Savanthun and The Guardians, can strike a partnership and be united against the common enemy, the Witness.
