Buddy Daddies Episode 9: Release Date, Speculation, Discussion

Rei is summoned back to his old house by his father in episode 8, titled “Nothing Seek, Nothing Find”. His father, boss of a major criminal organization, asks Rei to return to carry on their Suwa line, and gives him a mission to kill one of Rei’s old mentors for betraying the organization. Meanwhile, Kazuki and Miri prepares for a surprise birthday party for Rei in secret.

Rei and his mentor engages in a battle, and although it wasn’t Rei’s intention to actually kill him, he dies accidentally. Kazuki takes Rei home, who is touched after seeing all of Miri’s efforts. Ogino, one of Suwa’s men, asks for information on Miri from Kyutaro.

1. Episode 9 Speculation 

Rei’s father has learned about Miri’s existence and demanded for information about her and Kazuki after seeing Rei hesitate. It seems that Kyutaro will have to tell the duo urgently, and they will have to devise a plan to keep Miri safe, considering how brutal the Suwa head is.

The organization may even take this as a sign of their betrayal if they start getting more suspicious. If things get worse, they may have to go on a run. However, it is highly likely that for once, Rei will try to put his foot down and ask his father to reconsider. Whether his father will be capable of seeing his son’s emotions remains to be seen.

3. Episode 8 Recap

Rei dresses up and heads out early in the morning. Miri and Kazuki wakes up, and Rei tells them that he is going home. Miri is confused about Rei having another home, and Kazuki explains that his father probably called him. It turns out to be beneficial for them since they are preparing for a secret party for Rei’s birthday.

While shopping, Miri asks Kazuki about Rei’s father. He tells her that he is diabolical, which Miri misunderstands. Kazuki explains that Rei was raised really strictly because of all the burden his father put on him, which is why when he first met Rei, he was hollow and expressionless. 

Rei reaches his house and greets his father as boss, as he is head of a huge assassin organization. His father asks him to return to continue the Suwa line and learn about his duties as the heir. Seeing Rei hesitate, he asks if he fell into bad influence, and Rei quickly tells him it’s not because of Kazuki.

Rei asks for some time, and his father agrees but gives him a mission to assassinate the men who taught him to fight when he was young as he betrayed the organization. Ogino, who turns out to be one of Suwa’s men, drives Rei. Rei finds that his mentor probably left due to his girlfriend. However, his father had her killed. 

Rei is a little put off by Ogino’s thinking regarding killing. Ogino also asks him to let him know the mentor’s last words, part of his twisted hobby. Rei meets up with his mentor and engages in a lengthy battle. Meanwhile, Miri tells Kazuki her wish to make Rei smile since he looked sad to her.

As they are on top of each other, weapons pointed, Rei takes down his gun and tells the man that he also have something worth protecting. During their scuffle, the man accidentally falls off the rusty ceiling. Rei tries to catch but is too late. He catches him saying, “I am on my way,” as he falls to death.

Ogino takes the body, and Rei purposefully denies to having heard the man’s last words. Disgusted by his father and the organization, Rei ponders over his mentor’s words alone. 

Kazuki arrives in his car and drags him home, revealing the tracker he put on Rei’s phone. They talk about their past when they met and how Kazuki helped Rei escape his hollow shell and forced him to live decently again, which Rei admits wasn’t so bad.

Kazuki shows Rei everything they prepared at home. He wakes up Miri, who fell asleep after tiring herself out. He tells Rei that Miri helped prepare everything as she wanted to see Rei happy. Miri wakes up, and sings happy birthday for Rei, half-asleep. Rei is touched and actually smiles. 

Meanwhile, Ogino is sent by Rei’s father to demand information on Miri and Kazuki.

Kazuki and Rei are two roommates who are also assassins. While Kazuki has an extrovert personality and loves gambling and women, Rei speaks less and enjoys video games. One day, they end up taking care of Miri, a 4-year-old girl who is the daughter of one of their targets, a mafia leader.
