Florence Pugh has revealed an updated Black Widow costume in a behind-the-scenes video for the upcoming MCU film, Thunderbolts. While there are only a few Marvel movies releasing in 2024, there will be multiple MCU releases in 2025.
The Thunderbolts, directed by Jake Schreier, was delayed due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes in 2023 but is now scheduled to release on May 2, 2025. In the video, Pugh takes center stage, offering a sneak peek at the set, although no other Thunderbolts cast members were seen at that time.
In the Thunderbolts video, Florence Pugh’s new Black Widow costume stands out, hinting at an upgrade for her upcoming MCU appearance. The rest of the video provides a closer look at the stages and set buildings used for the movie.
While not much is explicitly revealed in the video, it implies that Yelena is being positioned as one of the key players, if not the biggest one. Marvel Studios rarely shares videos where one actor is the primary focus, making this an intriguing choice. Yelena receiving a new costume aligns with past MCU projects where major heroes have undergone suit upgrades.
The Thunderbolts movie may focus on the team as a whole, but it wouldn’t be surprising if it aims to elevate Yelena’s status as the new Black Widow within the MCU. As the Avengers transition to a new generation of heroes (including Sam Wilson as the new Captain America), Thunderbolts could solidify Yelena’s role following Natasha’s passing. Time will reveal Thunderbolts’ significance for Yelena, but this video alone hints at exciting developments for Black Widow.
Given that Thunderbolts is still in early production, we’ll have to wait for the first trailer. Perhaps they’ll make an appearance at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, considering they’ll be at least halfway through shooting. Hopefully, as filming progresses, more glimpses will be shared over the coming months.
