The outstanding comedy series developed by Dan Goor (Parks and Recreation) and Michael Schur (The Good Place) follows a team of detectives in Brooklyn at the 99th Precinct of the New York Police Department. The series has been an audience favorite since it first premiered on Fox in 2013 and completed a triumphant five-season run. The sitcom even won the Golden Globe for Best Comedy Series in 2014. As season five was finishing off, Fox discontinued Brooklyn Nine-Nine, much to the fans’ chagrin. After a huge outcry on social media, including by Hamilton star Lin-Manuel Miranda, the series was picked up by NBC, which went on to release seasons six and seven. Although Brooklyn Nine-Nine was forced to skip the 2020-21 broadcast season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many fans were excitedly anticipating the eighth season.

But NBC has officially confirmed that Brooklyn Nine-Nine would end its run after its forthcoming eighth season. The last season will air during the 2021-22 broadcast season, comprising ten episodes currently being filmed.

Melissa Fumero, who portrays adamant perfectionist Amy Santiago, reacted to the news by tweeting a post of producer Dan Goor’s appreciative words about the show and its loyal fandom.

The news of Brooklyn Nine-Nine coming to an end has come as a  shock to some. It seems like an inevitability to others as the writers must be content dealing with a series about the police in the wake of the unfortunate death of George Floyd in the summer of 2020. Many have wondered the fact if a comedy about the law can be appreciated and be considered reasonable in the wake of enormous protests and discussions on police brutality.

This real-world misfortune is something that the series’ writers have contemplated upon—even putting out a batch of scripts to start over to talk about the issue. While the series is mainly a comedy, the show has never backed out from tackling serious topics, like racial profiling, sexual harassment, and assault. But still, its stature as a comedy and the fact that the lead characters are all police officers could create a disconnect for the audiences, especially regarding their comfort to laugh at the characters’ moves.

Nevertheless, the series could have easily swung around in another direction, taking the central crew and putting them in a different vocation, like Archer‘s later seasons. It seems that the showrunners don’t want to overstay their welcome, recognizing that eight seasons is a good run for any series.

The crew can now seek new endeavors that they couldn’t earlier be part of (like Stephanie Beatriz and She-Hulk) due to their strict network television schedule. Fans can still enjoy Brooklyn Nine-Nine on various streaming services. In case the series ends up following a path similar to many popular shows, a revival or reunion is never off the table.
