Brie Larson Does Not Recall Shooting an Intense Scene in Oscar-Winning “Room”

Brie Larson is known for her utmost dedication in preparing for her cinematic roles. Her rigorous physical training for her character in the MCU franchise as Captain Marvel is a marvel to all. However, another role in her career caused her so much stress and adrenaline that the incident was wiped from her memory.

It is in no other movie than the 2015 drama Room that won her an Oscar, BAFTA, and Golden Globe for her tremendous performance. Her preparation for the role included secluding herself for a month before the shoot and extensively researching trauma and nutrition.

However, the incident that she blanks out on now is the shoot of one of the movie’s most intense scenes as she reunites with her son.

Brie Larson does not recall shooting the Oscar-worthy, emotional scene in Room that sees her crying intensely and finally reuniting with her son. She blames her memory lapse on the adrenalin rush and extreme conditions during the shoot.

Just like how Brie Larson undertakes arduous preparations for her role as Captain Marvel, she followed dedicated and intense methods to prepare for her performance as Ma in Room. The difference was that for Room, it was extreme psychological stress rather than physical one.

She secluded herself in her house, keeping away from sunlight and others, and extensively researched to understand what her character has gone through. Other than that, she also wrote diary entries as Ma at different ages and spent quality time daily with her young co-star to develop the strong bond needed between their characters.

According to her words with The Denver Post, she used her experience in scuba to portray the role and the journey itself.

“You can’t just strap on a tank and jump into the ocean,” she said. “You have to know how deep you’re going to go, and the deeper you go, the longer it will take to get to the surface again. And you write it all out, almost like a math equation for yourself before you get into the water.”

She continues, “When you’re inhabiting someone like that you have to say: That sense of helplessness is Ma’s. It’s not mine, and these are the reasons why I know for sure that’s not me. Ma might feel lonely; I don’t. Here are all the people that are important to me and that are in my life who I could call at any moment.”

“I even would go so far as to take a piece of paper and draw a line down the center of it and write Brie and Ma at the top, and just list all of the things that were me and all of the things that were Ma. And then, you can very clearly call back on it,” she added in an interview with Collider.

The movie was mostly shot inside a small box, and all six crew members were held up inside during the shoot, making the shooting too equally difficult.

First assistant director, Reid Dunlop, told CBC, “It was a very small box that was built with removable panels so a camera could go anywhere. They wanted to make it as real as possible, address [the characters’ confinement] as realistically as possible and give the actors a real sense of the claustrophobia.”

Even the crew members were not immune to the claustrophobic conditions. Larson told Collider, “It was such a small space that every day that we shot in Room, you could feel more and more agitation with the crew and with all of us in this small push, and this push to get out. By the time it hit, doing the escape sequence, they were like, “Brie, get us out of here. Get us home.”

One of the most intense scenes from the emotionally charged movie Room is Ma finally being back with her son and safe. However, actor Brie Larson had no recollection of the shoot and could only assume why she was so bruised the next day.

“I was in such an adrenaline rush, and I was running through the snow in socks with just those track pants and a tank top and no bra,” Larson tells Washington Post. But this is all she remembers.

In the scene, she is chased by police officers who try to put a coat on her. “And I guess I was fighting them off and hitting them, and then I slipped and fell on the ice, and then, when I went to dive into the police car” – where her young co-star was sitting in the backseat – “I guess I hit my head.”

Larson says she slept the whole ride home that evening, only to wake up the following day wondering why she was so bruised.

Her stunning performance in the movie is evidence of her dedication and sincerity toward her art. It is no wonder that she won the Oscars and several other awards for the film.
