Shade Thrown! Succession Star Comments on HBO’s Game of Thrones Ending

After the shocking twist in episode 3 of the final season of Succession, HBO star Brian Cox might be okay with spoiler’s death, but I’m definitely not! I did not see that coming despite how depressed Logan Roy has been with his current life after pushing his children out of the family business. But we’re not here to talk about that.

In an interview with NY Times, Brian Cox, who plays the Roy family patriarch Logan in Succession, addressed the surprising course the showrunners took for his character. The actor praised Jesse Armstrong’s decision to end the show strongly, but while doing so, dissed another HBO show which has an even bigger fandom than his own.

The Emmy-winning actor mentioned Game of Thrones’ rushed ending, saying “they didn’t know what they were doing at the end” and thus leaving behind a “furious” audience. You can read his full brutal comment below:

Game of Thrones

You think about Game of Thrones when they didn’t know what they were doing at the end, and they had an ending that was not really satisfactory. And the audience was furious.

Brian Cox

It’s quite challenging to deliver a series finale when dealing with over a thousand characters and more than ten open storylines while keeping course with the original material. GoT showrunners Benioff and Weiss did their best to maintain the balance, but the infamous season 8 finale remains a stain on the incredible fantasy series.

In fact, a petition asking HBO to “remake Game of Thrones Season 8 with competent writers” has nearly 2 million signatures, even though the studio will never do that. The series fandom does raise a good point, and Cox’s statement only stands with them, so I can’t say his comment was uncalled for.

But Cox’s show Succession has the perfect chance to avoid such a disaster. As the Scottish actor pointed out, the HBO drama has decided to end the show with season 4 on their own terms, so there will be no need for complicated and drawn-out storylines.

Plus, the number of plot Succession needs to wrap up is less than half of GoT, thus easing the pressure on the creator. All in all, Brian Cox’s confidence about his show avoiding Game of Thrones’ mistakes is correctly placed.
