Catsuka animation studios released first look for Slippin’ Jimmy, an animated spin-off series of Better Call Saul.
The series serves as a prequel to Better Call Saul and offers a newly carved backstory of the con artist-turned-incredibly-smart-lawyer representing criminals, James Morgan McGill, or Saul Goodman.
The teaser for Slippin’ Jimmy shows kid-Jimmy easily overthrowing the local bullies with his smartness and cunningness. The cartoon style is reminiscent of the 1970s and will focus on Jimmy’s childhood misadventures.
AMC and Catsuka have clearly defined the series for kids, meaning the grotesque violence and R-rated content are out. However, that is still the primary concern of fans loyal to Breaking Bad, the legendary parent show to Better Call Saul.
Fans called out the teaser’s animation style and its target audience. The looming question over social media regarding Slippin’ Jimmy was – is a spin-off, especially a kid’s spin-off, necessary?
With Better Call Saul’s season 6 coming up in April, many believed the animated series was stretching the franchise too far.
One of the biggest arguments was targeting kids, as fans believed the team was barking up the wrong tree. Though made for children, they wouldn’t know who Jimmy/Saul is, making the show just one of the many forgetful cartoons available in the mountain-full of content available.
Some also argued that another live-action show might work well as adults would spend more money to watch it and had much more chances of being remembered as a classic show.
Many fans who want to keep an open mind and test the show out, still demand better art style and animation. Both Better Call Saul and Breaking Bad offer viewers incredible cinematography. In comparison to them, even on animation levels, the series has been a letdown for many.
Just like the loyal fandom of Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, here’s hoping Slippin’ Jimmy has some material for everyone to enjoy it.
Slippin’ Jimmy will be released sometime in Spring 2022 on AMC+.
