Episode 10 Recap
This episode starts with Ryuji and Yatora taking the train to the beach in Odawara. Ryuji is dazed that Yatora decided to tag along even with his exams nearby. Yatora finds out that Ryuji’s reason for taking a trip was because he wanted to get away from his home.
They get settled into a cozy room at a motel. Yatora thinks it’s been too long he took a break since he started art and dozes off. Ryuji finds Yatora scratching a rash and stops him from making it worse. He understands his rashes started right before his exams because of stress.
As they head to bed, Yatora finds out that Ryuji’s parents threw everything away in his room. The next day as Yatora gets ready to practice drawing, he asks what Ryuji meant before by ‘I can’t die just yet.’ Ryuji tells him how he wanted to die once, but a friend told him to die naked.
Yatora thinks that’s embarrassing, but Ryuji continues what the friend stated. He says if you’re still bothered about what others think of you, then you can’t die yet. Ryuji asks Yatora if he’s drawn himself naked, to which he replies he hasn’t.
Ryuji states he’ll learn a lot more by drawing himself naked. Yatora hesitantly agrees and says Ryuji will draw with him and puts up a shade. As Yatora observes his body in the mirror, he realizes his body is like a lumpy eraser with patches of hair.
He then mentions Ryuji that he saw his artworks and found his fashion sketches better than the dessin. He asks why Ryuji chose Japanese art in the first place. Ryuji says it was because his grandma likes Japanese art.
He then tells how his grandma taught him, and he genuinely liked Japanese art. As he prepared for the exams, Ryuji found it harder to draw Japanese art. He states because of his grandma’s endless support, he didn’t want to let down his grandma’s wishes.
He states that Yatora always works hard and is focused, and he can’t match up to him. Yatora replies, saying he doesn’t have natural talent, so he uses whatever he’s learned.
Everyone praises him a lot, but he’s more impressed by people’s effortless talents as well.
Ryuji then states he’s loved a girl, but Yatora asks about a guy he once confessed to. Ryuji says he can feel men’s appeal as well, and with his girlish appearance, that would’ve been obvious. Yatora then asks Ryuji if he acted differently to make things simpler.
He states that forcing oneself to fit into a category won’t make people understand them better, which hits Ryuji. Yatora then says when he first met Ryuji, he thought he was a crossdressing guy. He states since he understands Ryuji now, he sees it differently.
Returning home, Ryuji gives Yatora a rash cream and appreciates him for tagging with him.
Ryuji apologizes for bothering him at a crucial time, but Yatora says passing or failing depends on him solely. Ryuji realizes while he’s given up, Yatora has been moving forward.
Back at cram school, Mrs. Ooba checks his work and tells Yatora she was a bit concerned when he went on a trip suddenly. She is happy to see it was fruitful, and Yatora did a good nude self-portrait as well. Yatora says he did compare the art with his friend.
Mrs. Ooba states having one’s nakedness seen shows they accept how they are. Yatora recalls that Ryuji plans to leave home and search for a fashion-related job. Mrs. Ooba gives Yatora, Kuwana and Hashida, a pep talk before the second exam and tells them to do their best.
As the gang head back home, Yatora gets a sudden ache in his eyes. At home, he wonders if his rash will get worse and heads to bed early. The next day, Yatora finds he must carry his material to the allotted room on a higher floor at the examination site.
Given that the elevators aren’t working, he takes the stairs. As Yatora lifts his material and climbs a level, he gets another ache and falls to the side. Yatora feels his eyes hurting and in pain. With the situation dire, he wonders if this is where it’ll end for him.
