The manga Blue Period which takes its title from Pablo Picasso’s Blue Period, is finally getting an anime adaptation. The manga doesn’t directly center on Picasso but it still takes inspiration and influences from that moment in time.
The manga written by Tsubasa Yamaguchi was published in 2017 under Kodansha publications. It soon rose to popularity and even won many awards.
The manga was so well received due to its unique art style and resonating yet informative story which also taught art techniques.
With all the high fame and admiration for the manga, it’s no surprise that we are getting an anime adaptation. In fact, I’m excited to see how well the anime adapts from the manga.
1. Blue Period Release Date: When is it coming?
Thankfully, we don’t have to wait for long, after they announced the anime adaptation in January of this year. The anime is set to release in October 2021 and will be animated by the Seven Arcs studios.
Seven Arcs has produced anime like Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha and Tonikawa: Over The Moon For You. So, we can hope for an amazing anime adaptation!
2. Blue Period’s Visuals
The newly released visual shows the main protagonist, Yataro Yaguchi, smiling after finding his newfound passion, art!

The teaser revealed starts with the main character, Yataro Yaguchi staring at a painting which awakens his passion for art.
After which it showcases some of the characters from the art club. He then takes his first step towards art by painting the Shibuya morning in blue.
That’s when his real journey begins in the endless learning of art!
4. Plot of Blue Period
Blue Period’s story follows the life of a second-year high school student, Yataro Yaguchi. A smart, popular and troubled student who is bored with his normal life. That is until he discovers a painting in the Art room.
Yataro becomes fascinated with the colors in the painting that he finds the passion and desire to pursue painting for a living. But there are multiple obstacles on his way because he is just a beginner.
5. Blue Period Main Characters and Cast
I. Yatora Yaguchi
Yatora Yaguchi is the main protagonist for the series “Blue Period”. He is the perfect student with good grades and lots of friends.
II. Ryuji Ayukawa
Ryuji Ayukawa is Yaguchi’s friend, a classmate and art member. It is her, who invites him to the art club.
III. Yotasuke Takahashi
Yotasuke Takahashi is a genius boy who has talent and skills for arts. Sadly, his communication skills are terrible.
IV. Haruka Hashida
Haruka Hashida is a classmate of Yaguchi and member of the art club. His hobby is to see the works of others, that he travels around to see museums and awe in inspiration.
V. Maki Kuwana
Maki Kuwana is considered an elite member of the art club. Her parents were from Tokyo University of Arts which makes her feel the pressure of having talented parents.

With its interesting story line and teachings of art techniques, I’m sure it’s going to make anyone grow passionate about art. Blue Period is set to become one of the greatest masterpieces once it is out this Fall.

The Blue Period manga is created by Tsubasa Yamaguchi and published by Kodansha. It was first serialized in Afternoon magazine in June 2017.
The Blue Period revolves around the life of Yataro Yaguchi, a highschool student. Yataro looks like a model student on the outside but fights with hollowness on the inside.
He is fascinated by a painting of the Art club and decides to take up art as a profession. His path is filled with obstacles, but he still expresses himself proudly with colors instead of words.
