Blue Lock’s hype has been there even before the anime adaptation was announced. The manga alone is so phenomenal that it gathered a following on par with other top-rated franchises.
Due to this popularity, the pressure of animating it increased tenfold because no one would dare mess with such a beloved manga. With such expectations also comes the tortuous wait for it, which might be over sooner than we expected.
Blue Lock anime’s latest promotional video confirms its release on October 8, 2022. It also previews the opening theme song “Chaos ga Kiwamaru” (Chaos Reigns) by Unison Square Garden.
Opening with some dark and intimidating symbolism, the trailer shows the budding strikers with chained necks, signifying how they’re locked up like prisoners.
Soon after, the video introduces the protagonist Yoichi Isagi’s various rivals and opponents. Some look tactical, while others look absolutely insane like they’ll do anything to reach the top.
The anime’s latest key visual features Yoichi with all these characters who will have a significant role in the story.

To Yoichi’s left, we have Zantetsu Tsurugi, Shouei Barou, Rensuke Kunigami, and Nagi Seishiro. After that, on the protagonist’s right side, there’s Hyōma Chigiri, Meguru Bachira, Ikki Niko, and Mikage Reo.
Lastly, emerging from the center of the visual, there’s the Wanima twins and Hibiki Okawa.
Since new characters are always introduced with their voice actor, the trailer has also revealed the latest additions to the cast lineup:
Character | Cast | Other Works |
Ikki Niko | Natsuki Hanae | Tanjirō Kamado (Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba) |
Junichi Wanima and Keisuke Wanima | Ryōta Suzuki | Yū Ishigami (Kaguya-sama: Love is War) |
Sae Itoshi | Takahiro Sakurai | Suzaku Kururugi (Code Geass) |
If the supporting characters’ cast is this impressive, you can only imagine how good the anime will be.
About Blue Lock
Blue Lock is a Japanese manga series written by Muneyuki Kaneshiro and illustrated by Yusuke Nomura. It has been serialized in Kodansha’s Weekly Shōnen Magazine since August 2018. Blue Lock won the 45th Kodansha Manga Award in the shōnen category in 2021.
The story begins with Japan’s elimination from the 2018 FIFA World Cup, which prompts the Japanese Football Union to start a program scouting high school players who will begin training in preparation for the 2022 Cup.
Isagi Youichi, a forward, receives an invitation to this program soon after his team loses the chance to go to Nationals because he passed to his less-skilled teammate.
Their coach will be Ego Jinpachi, who intends to “destroy Japanese loser football” by introducing a radical new training regimen: isolate 300 young strikers in a prison-like institution called “Blue Lock”.
