At present, the Japan Football Union is pleased that the financial gain from the Blue Lock vs Japan U-20 match will assist in recovering Ego’s losses, yet Ego firmly believes his team can triumph over the U-20 team and keep Blue Lock going.

Ego warns 35 remaining strikers that failure will result in Blue Lock’s demise and the end of their soccer dreams, while success will mean they can replace Japan’s U-20 team. Ego then explained the next phase of the competition: the Third Selection.

The top six players would be divided into three teams based on their ranking, while the remaining 29 would decide which pair they wanted to team up with. Each of the 29 players was required to form five teams by adding three players to one of the Top 6 duos.

Isagi reflects on how far he’s come when Ego announces the names of the six players making the core team. Blue Lock’s six current best players are revealed to be in order: Itoshi Rin, Shidou Ryusei, Karasu Tabito, Otoya Eita, Yukimiya Kenyu, and Nagi Seishiro.

Isagi is disappointed in himself for not making the cut. Each team would play a five-versus-five match, and the trial matches would determine who made it to the Blue Lock team for the upcoming match against Japan’s U-20 team. Because of the number of players, Meguru Bachira, the Top 6 runner-up, would be fielded in two trial games.

Isagi is insecure about having been playing alongside Nagi, Bachira, and Rin, now knowing they’re all better than him. Ego gives the remaining 29 strikers a message: the key to winning is “assertion and coexistence.” The remaining Team Z players gathered in the cafeteria, reminiscing about their teammates who didn’t make it through, including Rensuke Kunigami, whom they believed would succeed.

In the meantime, the top six acquaint themselves with one another. Shidou and Rin do not get along at all. Ego stopped the conflict between the two top-ranked players and revealed his expectations: he expected them to leverage the other players to boost their skills as top strikers internationally and to never give up their rankings.

Isagi tries to figure out what Ego’s instructions really mean as he brushes his teeth, with Shoei Barou mocking him for his lack of confidence. Barou knows he’s not teaming up with Nagi after their last game together, and he is sure he will be the best regardless of which team he is on. He wonders why Isagi isn’t in the top 6, believing that he should be ranked higher as his rival.

Isagi knows it’ll be hard to show off playing with Rin, which makes him think he should join Nagi. However, the next day, when the teams are displayed, Isagi is revealed to have joined Team A so he can play with Rin. Bachira also chose Team A. Barou, Raichi, Niko, and Chigiri all chose Team B. Zantetsu, Gagamaru, and even Reo joined Team C. Isagi flashes back to Ego’s instructions and thinks that he needs to wedge himself between the top 2.

Elsewhere, the Japan Football Union Special Advisor, Buratsuta, who hates the idea of a group of weird nobodies taking over Japanese soccer, is delighted about the Blue Lock versus Japan U-20 match generating significant interest, with many fans purchasing tickets early.

He emphasized that under no circumstances should the U-20 team lose to the Blue Lock team. The episode concluded with the U-20 team’s captain, eager to take on the challenge.

About Blue Lock

Blue Lock is a Japanese manga series written by Muneyuki Kaneshiro and illustrated by Yusuke Nomura. It has been serialized in Kodansha’s Weekly Shōnen Magazine since August 2018. Blue Lock won the 45th Kodansha Manga Award in the shōnen category in 2021.

The story begins with Japan’s elimination from the 2018 FIFA World Cup, which prompts the Japanese Football Union to start a program scouting high school players who will begin training in preparation for the 2022 Cup.

Isagi Youichi, a forward, receives an invitation to this program soon after his team loses the chance to go to Nationals because he passed to his less-skilled teammate.

Their coach will be Ego Jinpachi, who intends to “destroy Japanese loser football” by introducing a radical new training regimen: isolate 300 young strikers in a prison-like institution called “Blue Lock”.
