Since Warner Bros. slated the theatrical release of Blue Beetle in August 2023, fans have been waiting for a new update for the DC film—and it’s finally here! Photos from the set of Blue Beetle have been released, hinting at a significant comic change to Kord Industries.
Blue Beetle will follow the story of DC Comics character Jaime Reyes who holds the Blue Beetle scarab, from which he gets a superpowered suit made of alien tech, giving him the strength and power to fight crime.
The film will be directed by Angel Manuel Soto and stars Xolo Maridueña as Jaime Reyes/Blue Beetle, Bruna Marquezine as Jaime’s paramour Penny, Raoul Trujillo as Blue Beetle’s enemy Carapax, The Indestructible Man, Susan Sarandon, George Lopez, Adriana Baraza, and Harvey Guillén.
Blue Beetle, featuring the first Latino superhero of the DCEU, will be following the superhero’s origin. In April, Susan Sarandon was cast as Victoria Kord, and according to the information gathered, she will be playing an enemy of Reyes’ Blue Beetle.
In the comics, Victoria Kord doesn’t exist, but it doesn’t mean there’s no connection. According to the comics, Reyes had taken over the Blue Beetle’s mantle after the death of his predecessor, Ted Kord, and Victoria seems to be linked to him and Kord Industries.
The new images from the film’s set shared by Culture Geek PR feature many buildings taken over by Kord Industries, which the billionaire Ted Kord was CEO of in the comics. We can assume there will be some connection between the multi-billion-dollar company and Victoria, and that she might take over Ted’s role to some extent.
The set photos feature various buildings under the contractual development of Kord Industries, and we can theorize that the company deals with real estate and construction engineering. In the comics, this was not the case. Kord Industries under Ted Kord was a research and development company that developed defense products.
But one fact remains the same for Kord Industries, both in the comics and the 2023 film—Reyes’ town is mostly owned by Kord Industries, which is why the company plays a powerful role. There is a winning theory connecting the hierarchy of the Blue Scarab’s passing down, Sarandon’s character replacing Ted Kord, and the business change of the Kord Industries.
What is the theory? After Ted Kord’s death, his Blue Beetle mantle is taken over by Jaime Reyes, while Victoria takes over the reins of Kord Industries.
Victoria Kord then uses the company’s power for selfish and vengeful reasons and deals in dangerous weapons under the table. After Reyes figures out Kord’s double-faced mission, Blue Beetle takes over to stop Victoria at any expense.
While the theory seems highly plausible, not many plot details are available yet, and fans will only have to wait for further updates.
