All 2021 has given us for Overwatch 2 so far, is a sad and indefinite delay. But Blizzard Entertainment changed that today with its online-only BlizzCon 2021 event where a behind-the-scenes look at the game detailed new maps, skill trees, and much more.
As of now, Overwatch 2 is shaping up to be much more than just a campaign mode for Overwatch. The developers seem to be on track to add cool new updates to the core PvP modes in the game; this includes the introduction of two new maps, Rome and New York. These maps, while linking to the main narrative of the game, are specifically designed for PvP.
Blizzard also revealed that it will take up the task of making Overwatch characters more well-defined in their roles with Role Passives. These are background abilities that affect an entire class of characters. For instance, Tank characters like D.Va and Zarya will provide reduced ultimate charge to enemy characters, while DPS characters like Tracer and Genji will have increased movement speed to help them flank. They also promised better character definition through visual overhauls and overall animation improvements.
But the biggest change coming to the Overwatch model, by far, is Overwatch 2’s PvE campaign. During the livestream, the developers showcased the skill trees and interesting build potentials that each character can unlock if players undertake missions and level up. By combining new active and passive skills, each of the Overwatch heroes can be customized to fit each player’s desired play-style.
Additionally, Blizzard also provided details about new PvE maps coming to Overwatch 2 where players can indulge in Hero Missions. Hero Missions are the game’s replayable co-op PvP mode, which have been designed to entice new players who might be less interested in competitive play. Each Hero Mission will have its own non-PvP map with each map being much bigger than the traditional Overwatch maps. These maps will also feature day-night cycles and dynamic weather conditions.
