Black Panther: Wakanda Forever opened up to a big hit at the box office this weekend with favorable reviews from most critics and audiences. The sequel paid tribute to the titular character’s previous actor, Chadwick Boseman, who passed away before the film was written.
Producer Nate Moore teases the director’s cut, revealing a little of its content and whether it will ever see the light of day in a recent interview with Collider.
The sequel introduced many new characters to the MCU, including Dominique Thorne’s Ironheart and Tenoch Huerta’s Namor. The film also saw the return of Michael B. Jordan’s Killmonger, Angela Bassett’s Queen Ramonda, and Letitia Wright’s Shuri, introducing her as the new Black Panther.
In the Collider interview, Moore explained that the director’s cut included more scenes, but they were cut since it was “already a relatively long movie.”
A lot of characters have great scenes that the movie just couldn’t bear. It’s already a relatively long movie, and we wanted to make sure the film felt as focused as it could while doing as much as it’s doing. But there are some deleted scenes that are really cool. I think there’s a spectrum.
The producer added they’d done a “lot of screenings” initially but decided to release the theater cut, which is currently in cinemas. He also commented on how some of the deleted scenes are “closer to completion,” and some are “raw.”
There’s some from the Director’s Cut that didn’t make it forward. There are some that we played with for a long time and screened multiple times. We’re notorious for tinkering a lot in editorial and trying things. Ryan, by the way, is as well. So, things are in, and things are out. Some are closer to completion, and some are pretty raw.
When Moore was questioned about the deleted scenes, he commented that there were “a few” of them.
There’s a scene with Okoye and Ayo after Okoye has been fired that’s really interesting. That, again, is incredibly watchable. It just slowed the pace of the movie a little bit. But you get to see Okoye react to the new General, and you get to see what she was planning to do before the events of Namor and the Talocan coming to Wakanda happen. It’s actually pretty cool.
Moore also spoke about the possibility of the director’s cut release, and though he said, “never say never,” the chances of its release look slim since MCU films before have rarely ventured into that.
The Black Panther 2 producer did tease the deleted scenes being released in “some capacity” and mentioned they have “floated some ideas” for Black Panther 3.
It would have been interesting to learn more about Okoye’s state of mind after she was fired. But the sequel is already the lengthiest film of the MCU’s Phase Four, so it’s just as well they let those scenes go. After all, the movie was already filled with gripping emotions to the brim and adding more might have made it a little overwhelming.
Black Panther 2 is currently in cinemas, so go catch up with the latest adventure of Wakanda against Namor!
