Black Myth: Wukong to Get a DLC Like Elden Ring’s Shadow of the Erdtree

Black Myth: Wukong has raised enormous waves across the world, and not just limited to the gaming community. The entertainment industry is agape as the game broke multiple records for the number of sales and total sales revenue.

Being a game that broke records in a matter of hours of release, Black Myth: Wukong is getting a next Chapter. But this won’t be a sequel, and it definitely will not take six more years. The continuation will be a DLC, much like what Bandai Namco has done with Elden Ring.

Black Myth: Wukong will be getting a new Chapter in the form of a DLC and not a sequel, according to a Bloomberg Interview with Daniel Wu, co-founder of Hero Games. The release of the Wukong DLC will be announced later

After Shadow of Erdtree’s massive success, Wukong aims to ride its wave of success and drop the sequel, which will also be based on Chinese Mythology very soon. Though the date is unknown, the information has been confirmed by Bloomberg.

We get this information from a Bloomberg interview with Daniel Wu, the co-founder of Hero Games. Hero Games is the external investor that poured massive amounts of money into Game Science. It is the largest external shareholder in Wukong, besides the developers at Game Science.

“It won’t take another six years for the next chapter in what’s planned to be a series based on Chinese mythology — though that won’t be a sequel, Wu [Daniel Wu, Hero Games boss] said.

Game Science is currently working on this expansion to Wukong, which will explore newer realms of Chinese mythology. This will not only be a cheaper alternative for gamers since buying just the DLC is more cost-effective than buying a sequel game.

After being inspired by the success of Elden Ring, this seems to be a viable thing to do; this might become a trend in the future.

2. How much did Wukong make in sales?

When we mention the sales -Daniel Ahmad, director of research and insight at Niko Partners, said that Black Myth Wukong is now around the $800 million mark in total revenue generated. This is a ridiculous amount of money for a game to make, but reasonable if we think of the 70-million-dollar budget and the six years of effort that went into it.

According to Daniel Wu, they are still not making profits as Game Science has had many losses, but as the revenue is stable, they will soon be able to recoup their losses.

Daniel Wu has also said that “this is the most gruesome year for China’s games industry ever,” with wider economic difficulties leading to cuts in entertainment spending and several cancellations.

Another interesting thing in the Bloomberg interview is the matter regarding the caution document circulated by the game. The guidance document warned the content streamers to refrain from discussing or mentioning certain topics.

The topics will surprise you: “feminist propaganda,” Covid prevention measures, or the Chinese government’s policies. This seems less than fair and reasonable and not legal or binding, but Hero Games refused to discuss this document in many cases.
