In the bad ending, “The Destined One” defeats Sun Wukong and takes his place as the new Sun Wukong in the stone still marked with his glowing headband placed upon him by the Old Monkey.

This ending is understood to show the divine headband as a symbol of punishment on Sun Wukong, and his obedience towards the Buddha.

It can be seen as Sun Wukong being unable to break out of the control of the gods, being a servant to them, and forever imprisoned in the rocks.

Contradictorily, many players out there also believe it to be a “good ending” as to them Sun Wukong represents uncontrollable desire, and his headband the temperance and self-control preached by Buddha.

The true ending of the Black Myth: Wukong follows a similar premise. However, this time as The Destined One defeats Sun Wukong and the old monkey picks up his headband to place it on The Destined One’s head, a detailed animated cutscene plays out.

In this cutscene, we see Erlang taunting Sun Wukon that even though he attains Buddhahood, he will always be a slave to the gods due to his headband. Sun Wukong then replies to him ecstatically that he will “Rip it off and break free!”

The cutscene ends with Sun Wukong giving a final toast before raiding the celestial palace, which ultimately leads to him being imprisoned by the gods and the events of the prologue of the game.

This ending can be seen in two lights. One, The Destined One unlocked Sun Wukong’s memory and inherited his will along with his title. On the other hand, it can represent that Sun Wukong was finally set free from the imprisonment of the headband even though it was by means of his death.

Black Myth: Wukon follows a complex storytelling method, and the events may be interpreted slightly differently by different players as per their understanding. This makes the game more interesting and acceptable for players worldwide, and the same is reflected in its ratings.
