Billy The Kid S2E3 Ending Explained: Billy Takes A Drastic Step

Billy the Kid season 2, episode 3 finally brings us to the beginning of the Lincoln Country War where Billy and the Regulators were heavily involved.

Season 2 has laid the foundation of the bloody war between Lawrence Murphy and John Tunstall. Tunstall is a mentor and father figure to Billy, so his death has an intense impact on him and pulls him into the war.

Throughout episode 3, titled “The Agony,” we see Billy being frustrated about the ongoing events. His frustration leads to the shocking ending of The Agony. We have one episode to go before Billy the Kid season 2 takes a mid-season break, so a lot of things are at stake before the awaited mid-season finale.

By the end of season 2, episode 3, Billy the Kid is devastated by the death of John Tunstall. He forms the Regulators by bringing together the remaining supporters of Tunstall and vows to take revenge by killing every member of Jesse Evans’ gang.

The episode ends with Billy and the Regulators successfully hunting down two members of Jesse’s gang, Frank Baker and Billy Morton. After a massive shootout, the Regulators force Baker and Morton to surrender. Then, Billy the Kid mercilessly kills Morton and Baker in cold blood. The historical incident is referred to as the Blackwater Massacre in reality.

Usually, it is not considered honorable to kill defenseless enemies, especially if they have surrendered. After Morton and Baker surrender, Dick Brewer promises to let them go back to Lincoln Country safely. However, Billy realizes that if he brings them back to town, Brady will set them free. So, Billy decides to kill them instead of sending a statement to Jesse.

Billy’s growing relationship with Dulcinea also hits a rough patch in “The Agony.” In the episode, Billy informs Dulcinea about his plans to take revenge for Tunstall’s death. But Dulcinea is strongly against the idea as she had believed Billy is now a changed man.

She seems quite scared of Billy’s attitude when she realizes that Billy is not the reformed man she imagined he would be. But Billy does not change his mind and informs Dulcinea that war is at the doorstep of Lincoln County.

At this point, Dulcinea and Billy’s brief relationship likely comes to an end as Dulcinea throws Billy out of her house. It is not clear whether they will get back together in the future, as Dulcinea is a fictional addition to the series.

Billy the Kid season 2, episode 3, is one of the most significant episodes in the series to date as it sets up the events that led to the horrific Lincoln County War. It is Tunstall’s death that changed Billy’s life forever because he had always considered him the father figure in his life.

Tunstall was the only one who always treated him like an equal despite being a rich and wealthy man. His attitude influenced Billy immensely, which is why he vows revenge when Jesse murders Tunstall. On the path to revenge, Billy loses Dulcinea and also becomes the dreaded man who was feared by many.
