A recent trailer for No Man of God shows serial killer Ted Bundy calling FBI special agent Bill Hagmaier his “friend” (which did happen in real life, by the way) in an intense conversation.
No Man of God is an upcoming crime drama by RLJE Films based on a true story about the complicated relationship between the horrific Bundy, portrayed by Luke Kirby, and Hagmaier, played by Elijah Wood, during Bundy’s final years on death row.
At first glance, you’d think Luke Kirby doesn’t bear much resemblance to Bundy (I thought so, too), but at 1:15 minutes in the trailer, Kirby gives a sinister smile that’s enough to convince anyone that he looks like Bundy reincarnated.
In 1980, having been sentenced to death by electrocution, Bundy agreed to disclose the details of his crimes, but to one man only—Bill Hagmaier. The two then met and discussed murder techniques, as Bundy provided valuable insights into the mind of a serial killer.
An article published in 1990 by The Buffalo News has excerpts where Bill Hagmaier talks about his relationship with Bundy,
“During his last days, Ted Bundy called me his best friend. I don’t know how I feel about that. Here you have a guy giving you a warm handshake, and you’re thinking, ‘This is the same hand that held a hacksaw while he cut off a young girl’s head.'”
Bill Hagmaier
A week before Bundy’s execution on January 24, 1989, Hagmaier spent around 20 hours a day hearing the killer’s confessions. Bundy got the electric chair for the murder of a 12-year-old girl, but Hagmaier believed he’d murdered many more,
“He confessed to 30 murders. Here we had a serial murderer who was willing to re-create, step by step, his crimes and his methods. Hopefully, the information he gave us will give us a little better understanding of the serial killer. Maybe we can use the insight to catch someone in the future.
Bundy told me: ‘I’m going to take you inside a murder. I’m going to take you where no policeman has ever gone before.’ And he did. Bundy told me, ‘I became their God.’ He felt that when he killed somebody, he took over their body and soul, and no force on heaven or earth could stop him.”
Bill Hagmaier
Hagmaier was a member of the FBI’s elite Behavioral Science Unit, which was also the basis of the book Mindhunter: Inside the FBI’s Elite Serial Crime Unit written by retired FBI agent John E. Douglas and his co-author Mark Olshaker. The book then went on to be made into Netflix’s much-acclaimed series Mindhunter.
Hollywood’s fascination with serial killers is never-ending, and Ted Bundy has a special place in this list. Docuseries like Conversations with a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes and Ted Bundy: Falling for a Killer, and films like Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile, all explore the inhumane serial killer’s story.
RLJE is owned by AMC, so the film is likely to come on AMC’s streaming service. AMC Networks has a slew of true crime content including The Preppy Murder: Death in Central Park, Jonestown: Terror in the Jungle, and The Staircase, among others.
No Man of God is directed by Amber Sealey and written by C. Robert Cargill. The film is set to come out in theaters, on Demand and Digital HD on August 27, 2021.
