High Notoriety in Far Cry 6 Will Lead to Enemies Recognizing You

Last year, the Covid-19 pandemic forced development on many games to go under the radar including Ubisoft’s Far Cry 6. With many global gaming events like E3 suddenly unavailable, the game didn’t see much news for the entire year after its first reveal which unveiled Giancarlo Esposito as the game’s primary antagonist.

Following this long absence from the spotlight, the game recently received its first gameplay overview. Players also got a good look at the game’s protagonist, Dani Rojas, along with what is said to be Far Cry’s biggest map yet. Additionally, an overhauled notoriety system was also revealed which, according to first impressions, will have a significant impact on how players interact with the game’s open world.

In previous Far Cry titles, if an alarm was raised at an outpost, simply deactivating the alarm and hiding or removing all threats from the area would be enough to restore normalcy. Far Cry 6, however, makes a number of key changes to this system where simply taking out an outpost is not enough to completely get the heat off of your back. In fact, continually wreaking havoc in Yara, the country in which the game is set, will have a range of different impacts on player experience.

“If you keep taking advantage of this system, shooting at a bunch of soldiers, that means you are pushing the world,”

Lead Game Designer David Grivel

“If you push the world, the world will push back. At some point, you will cross a threshold where [Yaran president] Antón Castillo will send reinforcements to look for you because you are creating so much chaos. But at least now you have control; you have the choice of creating that heat, if you want to.”

Grivel also outlined that the occurrence of such scenarios is totally dependent on the player and what kind of notoriety score they knock up.

“If you see enemies in the world, and you get close to them, then they will start recognizing you. The good news is that this [Notoriety] goes up, yes, but it can also go down. There is absolutely a way for you to get back into full incognito mode, which is really important.”

So, if you wish to keep a low-profile in Yara, maybe behave as you would in real-life. For instance, keeping your weapon holstered when you’re around friendlies can keep cops from regarding you as the most dangerous member of the resistance. However, if you want to throw caution to the wind and be a gun-toting, madman of a player, hell-bent on sticking it to The Man, then be prepared to deal with the consequences.

Far Cry 6 is scheduled to arrive for PS4/5, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PC, Google Stadia, and Amazon Luna on October 7, 2021. You can read more about the game on its webpage.
