The Best of Song Joong-ki that You Have to Watch Now!

Ask any novice to name a Korean actor, odds are that you’ll hear a lot of “Song Joong-ki!” Song is not like one of your typical actors, especially in looks — as he sports what fans called a “flower boy” face. But while the actor may look adorable, he has a noteworthy repertoire of projects.

If you’re slowly falling in love with him (can’t blame you!) and want to dive into more of his work, I’ve got you covered. Here are the Song Joong-ki projects you simply cannot miss:

1. Descendants of the Sun

Song Joong-ki stars as a Special Forces commander in a thrilling military drama opposite Song Hye-kyo.

Although at this point Song had acted in quite a few projects, it would be DOTS that would make him a household name and catapult him into success. This drama is also regarded as one of the best K-dramas of all time.

2. Vincenzo

Here, Song Joong-ki plays an Italian mafia consigliere, who returns to Korea to finish off some business and take off with a loot. The only thing that stands in the way is that he gets too attached to his quirky building residents, who constantly seem to need his mafia-related help.

This was a second major hit for Song, which only came quite recently in 2021.

3. A Werewolf Boy

Back from Song Jong-ki’s early days, he plays a “feral” boy who actually may be a werewolf. He finds love in a young girl who vows to protect him from the angry villagers.

This was one of the first Korean movies I watched and it was truly an endearing one! It’s a sweet, solemn love story and you can’t help but fall in love with Song’s character, just as Sun-yi, his romantic interest, does. Don’t miss out watching this!

4. Space Sweepers

Space Sweepers

Song Joong-ki plays Tae-oh, a broke garbage collector in space, who comes across a rather valuable child. He and his crew agree to deliver the child to the rightful authorities for a price – but all is not what it seems.

If you’re looking for a thrilling Sci-fi adventure with an impressive cast, engaging plotline and good laughs, make Space Sweepers your next watch! This served as Song’s return to movies after a long time.

5. The Arthdal Chronicles

Song Joong-ki stars in The Arthdal Chronicles as Eun-seom, a young man who through his struggles must understand his identity in his tribe.

This show is popularly called as the first “ancient” historical K-drama, as it is set in the Bronze age and loosely follows the lore of Dangun, the founder of the first Korean Kingdom of Gojoseon. Funnily enough, this K-drama was more popular in the USA! The Song Joong-ki effect, am I right?

6. Reborn Rich

Reborn Rich

In Reborn Rich, Song Joon-ki plays dual roles: One, of an employee who gets murdered to cover his company, Soonyang’s mishaps and second, the reincarnation of the Soonyang’s heir.

The title quite nearly gives away the basic mechanisms of the plot, but the episodes themselves are enthralling enough to keep you wanting for more! This is also one of Song’s more recent releases, as it’s from 2022.

7. Sungkyunkwan Scandal

Song Jong-ki joined the period drama, Sungkyunkwan Scandal, as part of the supporting cast, playing a mischievous classmate to Yon-hee, who cannot technically study in their school because she’s a girl.

This, once again, is from Song’s very early days and if you’re an ardent fan, you definitely need to watch this for bragging rights!

8. The Innocent Man

The Innocent

After being scorned by a woman who chooses money over him, Song Jong-Ki’s character plots revenge by fake dating a CEO’s daughter.

This is the classic fake-dating trope but like a lot of 2000s K-dramas, it is quite melodramatic. You’ve been warned!

9. The Battleship Island

In The Battleship Island, Song Joong-ki is part of an ensemble, as a member of the Korean Independence movement. This film depicts how 400 Korean prisoners try to break free from a labor camp on Hashima Island.

This is one of Song’s more serious roles, but as usual, his performance shines through driving across the film’s important messages.

10. Bonus: Cameos!

Fancy Song Joong-ki popping up on your screen now and then? Then don’t miss his guest appearances!

Song Joong-ki has had cameos in Little Women, Man to Man, Sound of your Heart, and The Grand Heist.
