Studio Chizu’s upcoming Cannes film festival premiere BELLE is just a week away from release.
The anime film will also mark the 10th anniversary of Studio Chizu, well known for feature films like The Girl Who Leapt Through Time and Mirai. Belle will be the next step for director Mamoru Hosoda’s dream-like concepts of virtual worlds, which we see in Summer Wars.
Telling the story of Beauty and the Beast through a modern take truly has me intrigued.
Studio Chizu started streaming the first 3 minutes of Belle on the Toho movie Youtube channel. However, the clip will only be available for a limited period of 48 hours, i.e., until 11th July.

The three-minute clip is chock-full of the virtual world of “U,” the film’s primary setting. The most prominent aspect of U is the intense 3DCG landscape full of skyscrapers, shiny decorations, and metal clouds.
The main character, Belle, could be seen on a floating whale with woofers on its body. Belle, wearing a flowery crimson red dress, sings the poppy theme song “U,” which gives mad Shakira vibes.
Overall, the aesthetic of U is very video game-like, with people wearing ridiculous costumes. However, there is a surreal charm that radiates through the long sweeping shots. In addition, the songs are very grandiose and add even more elegance to this already aesthetic world.
The preview gets me excited about how the story will take place in this world of “U,” as of now, the video is only available for two days.
So catch it before it leaves!!
About Belle
Belle: The Princess of Dragons and Freckles is an upcoming original anime film by Mamoru Hosoda. Studio Chizu is animating it.
The film’s plot follows Suzu, a 17-year-old girl who had lost her mother at an early age. She enters a virtual world name “U” as an avatar, Belle.
Belle’s singing attracts worldwide attention, and she meets a mysterious dragon-shaped creature.
It is a coming of age film with themes of familial love and friendship that knows no barriers.
