Bel-Air just found itself a fresh new group of actors! On September 14, Peacock revealed the main cast of the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air spin-off series.
The 90s cult classic series spanned six seasons and had everyone rolling with laughter while simultaneously being educated on class, race, and more social issues. The reboot, however, offers a more modern, darker touch to the show while keeping the premise the same.
Newcomer Jabari Banks was revealed earlier as stepping into the iconic character of Will. Joining him now is an entirely new cast of the beloved family in Fresh Prince.
Cassandra Freeman and Adrian Holmes will play the sweet Aunt Vivian and strict-but-cute Uncle Phillip.
Children Carlton, Hilary, and Ashley will be played by Olly Sholotan, Coco Jones, and Akira Akbar, respectively.
Jimmy Akingbola will complete the Banks’ household by essaying Geoffrey, the family butler’s role.
Jordan L. Jones will wear the hat of Will’s long-time close friend, Jazz, while Simone Joy Jones will portray Will’s love interest (and step-sister?), Lisa.
With the main cast announced and fans reveling in joy, there’s a couple of burning questions in many people’s minds (including me).
Where is Will’s mother? Who’s playing her role? Is she not a part of the reboot?
Viola Smith, Will’s mother, is an essential part of the series. A single mother with her struggles, wanting to have her son live a poverty-free life away from the ghetto is what makes the show’s premise.
Played by different actors but memorable for Vernee Watson; it’s somewhat confusing why Viola Smith hasn’t yet been announced. Her character dropped in and out of the show a couple of times, but each appearance had a vital role in the story arc.
Whether it was marrying Will’s girlfriend Lisa’s father or showing signs of prejudice (and later learned to accept) during her sister’s interracial marriage – Viola ‘Vy’ Smith is a crucial character in Will’s and the show’s storyline.
Hear us out. What if, considering Bel-Air is revealed to be a darker show than its predecessor, Viola Smith’s disappearance has something to do with the storyline?
