Lee Sung Jin, the creator of the black comedy series Beef, has hinted at Danny and Amy’s narrative arc in the show’s second season and beyond.
Starring Steven Yeun and Ali Wong, Beef follows the story of two strangers whose encounter during a road-rage incident results in an escalating conflict. The series premiered on April 6 and has been well-received by both critics and viewers, with over 34 million hours of viewing time already recorded on Netflix’s charts.
Although there is no official confirmation about the second season of Beef, Lee Sung Jin discusses the show’s potential future in an interview with Rolling Stone. While he aimed to wrap up the series in a conclusive manner, Lee expresses his hope for a second season and hints at numerous possibilities for Danny and Amy’s storyline. He even mentions having a mapped-out plan for up to three seasons.
Here’s what Lee said –
“I wanted it to have a conclusive feel just in case, but there are a lot of ideas on my end to keep this story going. I think should we be blessed with a Season Two, there’s a lot of ways for Danny and Amy to continue. I have one really big general idea that I can’t really say yet, but I have three seasons mapped out in my head currently.”
Beef cleverly deviates from the expectations set by its premise. Instead of the road-rage incident resulting in comical retribution and regular clashes between Danny and Amy, the show keeps the two main characters at a distance and explores the underlying factors that drive them towards their increasingly absurd behavior.
While still humorous, the deliberate separation of Steven Yeun and Ali Wong’s characters serves a purpose, highlighting the show’s central theme that it is difficult to truly understand a stranger’s experiences, and therefore, empathy is crucial. It’s an elegant reinforcement of one of Beef’s main ideas.
In the last few episodes of Beef’s first season, Danny and Amy end up in the desert where they spend a significant amount of time together. Despite their initial animosity towards each other, the accidental poisoning brings them closer, and they start to recognize their similarities.
As they bond over their shared experiences, they appear to be on the path towards friendship, which makes it all the more heart-wrenching when George, Amy’s spouse, mistakenly shoots Danny, believing that he is attacking her.
The last scene of Beef’s first season shows Amy keeping a close watch over a severely injured Danny at the hospital, and in a gesture of comfort, she joins him in bed. The scene implies that many days pass in this way, and hints at Danny’s eventual recovery. It’s uncertain whether the second season of Beef will focus on Danny’s recovery but given the impressive job that Lee and his team have done so far, they are likely planning something much more ambitious for the future of the show.
