Page Break in God of War (2018), you’ll encounter a couple of blacksmiths that play a somewhat important role in Kratos and Atreus’ journey. As many of you may already know, the blacksmiths I’m talking about are Brok and Sindri.
Aside from upgrading your equipment, these dwarves also give you side-quests (Favors) filled with some of the best rewards in the game. Second Hand Soul is one such Favor given by Brok that tasks you with finding his missing friend, Andvari the Alchemist.
The Favor requires you to travel to Volunder Mines and fight a boss of sorts, so it’s safe to say that the Favor is a little tricky to complete. As always, though, we’ve got you covered. So, first, let me give you a quick TL; DR on beating Brok’s Favor, Second Hand Soul, in God of War.
To complete the ‘Second Hand Soul’ Favor in God of War, you’ve to make your way to the locked door with three runes in Volunder Mines. After finding and destroying the runes, defeat the Soul Eater inside and bring back the remains of Andvari to Brok – this will mark the end of your Favor.
As I’ve mentioned just now, you need to find three runes to open the locked door, and fight the Soul Eater within. Considering how it can get a little tricky to locate and destroy those runes, we still need to discuss this Favor’s questline in detail.
So, let’s do exactly that, shall we? Let’s discuss Second Hand Soul a little more in depth.
Second Hand Soul Favor – Walkthrough
I. Entering the Cave and making your way in
Once you make your way to Volunder Mines (Sail through the frozen waters until you can dock), you need to locate Brok and speak to him to receive a Volunder Entry Stone and access the mine. You’ll find him working past a Lore Marker and a chest.
Just a little after the cave’s entrance, you’ll find a red pot to your left – break it to destroy what’s behind it, and obtain some Soft Svartalfheim Steel and some World Serpent scale fragments.
As you move on, a short cutscene will play out that shows a Soul Eater come to life. This guy will be quest’s end boss – more on that later.
Once you head down, a few Draugr and Nightmares will pop up for you to mow down. After you defeat them all, follow the path that the Soul Eater took.
Moving into the next area, you’ll encounter a revenant in your path – take your time to defeat it. You might spot a locked door with three runes on its top – you know the drill, now is the time to find and destroy these runes to open the gate.
II. Destroying the runes and opening the Volunder Mines locked door
The first two symbols would be right around you if you’re standing on the bridge, same as in the image above. The first rune is to the right of the door, below a hanging red pot. Chuck your ax at the pots holder to destroy it with ease.
As for the next rune, it would be right behind you, now to your right. Chuck your ax directly at it to destroy it.
Now, you need to drop to the lower levels and make your way to the room with the shut door. Once you open it, the last rune would be on your right, next to another chest containing Svartalfheim steel and World Serpent fragments.
Here you’ll also find that Avandri has essentially been devoured by the Soul Eater, with his hand being the only remaining part of him.
With the runes destroyed, the door would finally open. It’s time to face the big boy.
III. How to defeat the Soul Eater?
As is the case with all the other ancients, your regular and Runic attacks, along with your Spartan Rage, won’t work on it. To damage the Soul Eater, you need to throw the Leviathan Axe at it as soon as it opens its chest and reveals the core.
You might notice that after throwing the ax, a part of his body drops down to the ground. What you need to do, is to pick that part up as soon as you get the opportunity to and throw that at the Soul Eater’s core the same way you threw the ax.
This will deal massive damage to the beast.
All that’s left to do is repeat those steps, get a few critical hits on the Soul Eater, and kill the occasional Draugr that might pop up here and there throughout the fight.
Eventually, Kratos would rip the core out of the Soul Eater, killing it and ending the boss fight. Defeating it rewards you with some good resources, along with The Alchemist Ring and the Fire Sigil of Protection.
To end the questline, you need to take the ring back to Brok and talk to him once again.
IV. The Second Hand Soul Favor – Rewards
As you make your way back to Brok, you’ll encounter a couple more Draugr and Nightmares. Finish them up, and once you enter Brok’s workshop again, interact with him – Atreus would tell him about his friend and how his hand was the only thing that remained.
The conversation would end with Brok giving you your promised reward – a Rare Axe Pommel, Grip of Volunder. The pommel is pretty cool and viable, allowing you to tank through hits as you mow down your enemies.
But, with that, though, this Favor has finally come to an end. Now, it’s time for you to go and try out this new pommel – have fun.
