Doctor Who Audio Drama Are Here to Stay – At least Till 2030

To all the Doctor Who fans, the adventures of the Doctor will keep coming for another eight years down the line, till 2030.

According to ComicBook, Director of Books and Audio at BBC Studios, Jan Paterson said that they had renewed their contract with audio company Big Finish. Having worked with them for over 20 years, the company has added another decade to their contract.

The first-ever Doctor Who adventure audio drama, The Monthly Adventures, was released in July 1999. They have been ardent fans’ constant support and shelter throughout the last two decades.

As stated by Paterson, the extension of the contract allows them to create many more “fantastic new adventures for the Doctors and their friends for many more years.”

The gigantic universe of Doctor Who has limitless possibilities. Situations that wouldn’t seem feasible for a TV show or movie would be turned into reality in the beloved audio dramas.

Big Finish’s Chairman and co-executive producer Jason Haigh-Ellery also revealed a little about their plans. The continuation of the adventure series until 2030 opens incredible opportunities for them to create long-term storylines with new characters and elements.

With the renewal made public only on December 11, there already has been quite a few storyline planning done on the company’s end, as Haigh-Ellery’s statement implied.

We are very grateful to the BBC for once again placing their faith in Big Finish and extending our license into another decade – this time up to 2030. This allows us to really plan ahead and create long term story lines and character development not just for the Doctors and the companions but also for new series and elements that we can’t talk about yet! We are excited about the next decade and the adventures we are going to create in the TARDIS for us all to enjoy together.

When there’s talk of Doctor Who audio dramas, one can never forget Nicholas Briggs. Briggs has been the voice behind some stellar bad guys such as Cybermen, Judoon, and the Daleks.

Briggs, who just crossed the 60-years-old mark, gleefully acknowledged that the show “takes him past his retirement age” but also adds that he has no plans to retire from anything.

With more audio dramas by the same creators and voice actors, fans can be sure there’ll only be more quality Doctor Who stories produced further.
