Matt Reeves’ The Batman is spiraling into its own DC universe and has another spinoff series in the making.
Reportedly set on Earth-2, The Batman has already been planned for a trilogy and will get an HBO Max Gotham PD spinoff series.
To say that the new Batman film starring Robert Pattinson as the Caped Crusader is ‘highly-anticipated’ would be undermining the hype that’s been built around it.
Now, Variety has reported that another spinoff series about The Penguin is currently in development at HBO Max. However, HBO Max has declined to comment.
The Penguin, aka Oswald Cobblepot, is one of the most famous supervillains of the Batman Rogues Gallery and is one of the many villains set to appear in The Batman.
Colin Farrell, who plays the villain in the upcoming film (and looks unrecognizable), has been approached for the series, but no deal is currently in place. The same sources suggest that Lauren LeFranc is attached to write the script for the project.
The show will supposedly delve into The Penguin’s rise to power in the Gotham criminal underworld. With Matt Reeves reportedly wanting The Batman’s final cut to remain three hours long than two, The Penguin is sure to get an establishing plot point or some sort of link for the spinoff.
The other spinoff of the film, Gotham PD, in works at HBO Max, has Joe Barton attached as the showrunner. The series currently has a working title of ‘Arkham.’
The Batman will have several villains as their ‘primitive’ selves, including The Riddler, Catwoman, and Penguin. Bruce Wayne himself will be very young and is still trying to figure out where he stands.
So, it won’t be a stretch to assume that these spinoff series will somehow connect to each other and tie into the second and third films in Reeves’ trilogy.
There are several DC shows in the works at HBO Max, including Peacemaker, Green Lantern, and Justice League Dark, among others.
As DC FanDome inches closer, fans can expect a full-length trailer for The Batman along with possible updates on the spinoffs on October 16.
The Batman is set to hit the theaters on March 4, 2022.
