J.J. Abrams and Matt Reeves’ upcoming animated adaptation of Batman, titled Batman: Caped Crusader, has received some positive news as it finds a new platform.
Although DC Studios is currently working on a new DC Universe, projects based on Elseworlds are still in progress. One such project is Batman: Caped Crusader, which was announced years ago as a fresh take on the Dark Knight in animated form.
The show, which was created by Abrams, Reeves, and Bruce Timm, was initially set to air on HBO Max, but it lost its spot on the streaming service and was up for grabs. In August 2022, Netflix and Apple+ TV became the leading contenders to air the DC animated series.
It’s been nearly a year since the last update, but it seems that progress is finally being made.
According to THR, the upcoming series Batman: Caped Crusader, which is produced by Abrams and Reeves, is in the final stages of being picked up by Amazon.
The series has been given a two-season order, but there is no news yet on when it will premiere. Hulu was also reportedly interested in picking up the show before Amazon secured the deal.
However, representatives from all parties involved have not commented on the news, and THR notes that formal agreements have yet to be made.
Batman: Caped Crusader coming to Amazon is a major deal for a number of reasons. It is one of the handful of DC projects to survive after being removed from HBO Max during Warner Bros. Discovery’s cost-cutting efforts.
This is also coming after a deal was struck to produce DC TV animation on Amazon with Warner Bros. TV. In November 2022, Warner Bros. TV president Channing Dungey first began teasing that big plans were in the works with Amazon.
Dungey has emphasized that HBO Max is still a priority for them, as long as they can come to an agreement. Although HBO Max may be their primary choice, they are actively seeking to establish partnerships with major companies like Amazon.
This could potentially result in Amazon becoming the platform for releasing DC’s animated Elseworlds-based content. While HBO Max already hosts DC Universe-linked shows, Amazon may serve as the platform for independent DC animated projects.
It’s exciting to see that the Elseworlds properties are still moving forward, especially with James Gunn’s DC Universe on the horizon. The upcoming show, Batman: Caped Crusader, which is being developed by Reeves, Abrams, and Timm, is sure to be captivating, as they are aiming for a noir-inspired tone.
Once the show completes its two-season order, we can look forward to hearing more updates, including details about casting.
