There’s something so inexplicably appealing about The Bad Batch crew — none of us can seem to get enough of them.
Disney’s new Star Wars spin-off follows The Bad Batch (a band of ‘defective’ clones) as they wreak havoc through the galaxy.
The show takes place during the execution of Order 66, where all the Clonetroopers have been ordered to exterminate the Jedi Order. And while Clones are created with programming never to disobey their master, The Bad Batch crew (except one) can bypass these commands thanks to their genetic “defects.”
Next? Ensue a galaxy-wide chase where our crew must outrun the ever-expanding Empire, commit violent crimes to survive, and still manage to be good role models to their reluctantly adopted child.
Many of us agree that the best part of the show is the characters and their dynamics. Despite being molded from popular archetypes, each of these characters brings something interesting to the table; it’s 70% of the entire charm.
So if you’ve been wondering about them or want to know about what exactly makes these characters unique: let me give you a run-down on the crew’s powers, abilities, and more!
What are we waiting for? Let’s go!
5 Tech
“I refuse to sleep by a projectile again.”
Tech
Appearance: Tech’s genetic mutations gave him a leaner and fairer look compared to his Clone Mates. Some also describe him as younger-looking, but that receding hairline doesn’t really help the claim, does it?
Powers – Enhanced Intellect
Skills – Technology & Science
Tech’s specialties lie in, for the lack of a better word, tech.
His mutations give him an affinity towards science and technology, and he often operates as the ‘brains’ behind the missions. Don’t fit him into a box, though; Tech is also very skilled at combat.
Perhaps one of Tech’s best moments from the show is when he reprogrammed a bot during a training drill. It didn’t take the guy more than a few seconds to rewire an enemy warbot and use it against them. You cannot convince me that wasn’t cool.
Personality: Tech tends to avoid confrontation and is generally respectful, but don’t count on him to avoid roasting himself or his peers.
Hunter: An Imperial’s been sent to evaluate the clones. Everybody’s talking about it.
Echo: What kind of evaluation?
Tech: Hopefully not mental. Clearly we’d never pass that.
4 Wrecker
Wrecker: I’ll say this for the Empire: they know firepower. You should see the new armory.
Crosshair: He actually cried.
Appearance: Thanks to his mutations, Wrecker is built significantly larger and heavier than the regular clones. And if that wasn’t intimidating enough, Wrecker has heavy scars on the left side of his face, and seems to be missing an eye.
Where he got the scars? Nobody is sure. But given how much the dude loves to blow things up, it’s not a hard guess, really.
“I get to blow it up? The whole stinkin’ thing?! This is the happiest day of my life.”
Wrecker after Anakin allows him to blow the Separatist Dreadnought
Powers – Super Strength
Skills – Demolitions
Wrecker serves as the demolitions expert for the team, and unlike Tech, he’s more involved in the tasks that require brute strength. Setting things on fire and charging headfirst into battle — that’s his quirk.
Personality: Wrecker is impatient and headstrong and has a very childish speech pattern (you need to understand that ‘smart’ isn’t exactly his strongest suit). But he’s probably the most sensitive and emotionally expressive among his crewmates (even if 90% of the time he’s only emotional about setting people up in flames).
We saw this when he went out of his way and built Omega a room aboard their ship (I may or may not have teared up a little) and tried to act bravely in front of her despite being scared out of his mind. Uncle Wrecker for the win. *sobs*
3 Echo
“You’re more machine than a man… at least percentage-wise.”
Tech to Echo
Appearance: While his Squadmates have distinct features, Echo is indistinguishable from the other Clonetroopers — well, at least until you notice he’s a cyborg.
Powers – Cyborg
Skills – Hacking secure systems
Echo was previously part of the Domino Squad, but during a rescue mission to Lola Suya, his shuttle was blasted by a droid. He was assumed dead until Captain Rex learned he was being held captive and experimented on by the Techno Union. Rex led a rescue mission with the Bad Batch and Anakin Skywalker, and even though they managed to bust him out, Echo had already been turned into a cyborg.
Echo then fought alongside the Bad Batch in Anaxes and later joined the crew as he realized he felt more comfortable with them.
Personality: Echo is respectful and law-abiding, mostly.
Though he prefers order and structure, he’s known to go against standard protocols to fight for what he believes is right. He’s fiercely loyal to his friends, despite being exasperated by their … questionable behavior.
If I didn’t know any better, I’d call Echo the ‘mom friend.’ But he’s more like the ‘I-am-exhausted-with-your-clownery-but-I’ll-still-join-you-in-this-clownery’ friend.
2 Crosshair
“Good Soldiers follow orders.”
Crosshair
Appearance: Crosshair has a thin scar running down the right side of his face, though it doesn’t affect his eyes. He’s also leaner than regular Troopers and has grey hair instead of the dark hair color his brethren share.
Powers – Enhanced Eyesight
Skill – Sharpshooting
Crosshair’s exceptional eyesight makes him the perfect sharpshooter. He can shoot targets from miles away and usually acts as the sniper during missions, covering his team from higher grounds.
Crosshair is also physically strong and can climb difficult places with relative ease, gaining access to enemy posts faster than anyone else.
Personality:
“Crosshair, on the other hand, he’s not much of a conversationalist, but when you have to hit a precise target from ten klicks, Crosshair’s your man.”
Hunter
When he’s not shooting things, you’ll find Crosshair brooding or making sarcastic comments at everyone — team and non-teammates alike. Crosshair tends to carry himself with a sense of superiority and shows disdain towards working with those he considers inferiors (regular Clones, usually). His disregard for politeness and questionable social etiquette makes him look cold— actually, no. It doesn’t make him ‘look’ cold. He is cold.
Crosshair regularly gets into contests with Wrecker over who can hit the most droids during a mission, and given their polar personalities, the two are often seen bantering amongst themselves. It’s quite adorable, to be honest.
1 Hunter
“Disobeying orders again over a kid? Bad play, Hunter.”
Crosshair to Hunter
Appearance: Hunter is the easiest to distinguish from his peers. His left profile is burnt and scarred, and he wears a red bandana that immediately sets him apart. He also has slightly different features from his peers (long hair and tan skin) and has broader shoulders.
Powers – Heightened Senses
Skills – Target Tracking
Hunter’s “defects” resulted in him having spidey senses. He can track targets from anywhere on a planet, and he can do it better than any technological device on hand. Hunter can also sense electromagnetic frequencies, allowing him to dig specific locations out as well. He is also a great fighter.
Hunter acts like the team leader, guiding the chaotic team with his ability to stay focused under pressuring circumstances.
Personality: Though he appears stoic and grumpy, Hunter is friendly (by his team’s standard, at least).
He also has a strong sense of morals and values and is capable of disobeying orders if he deems them unjust. When dealing with other teams and enemies, Hunter takes charge by default, thanks to his diplomatic skills.
Though he pretended to be annoyed by her presence, Hunter rushed back to get Omega from Kamino, even though it put him and his crew at risk. This shows that while he might not be the best at expressing it, he cares about his people.
Honorary Mention: Omega
“I like you. You don’t fit in here either.”
Omega to The Bad Batch
Omega may not officially be a member of Bad Batch, but the crew has as good as adopted her, so it’s unfair if she doesn’t make this list.
Appearance: Omega has ash-blonde hair that’s cropped to its limits and wears a Kamino-style forehead pendant. She has big, brown eyes and appears to have a light tan.
Power – Enhanced Clone
Skill – Heightened Awareness; Unspecified
Through her unique skills are yet to be seen, Omega is said to have a heightened awareness thanks to her enhancement as Nala Se’s assistant.
Despite her age, Omega is a fast learner. She’s quick to learn a blaster during the crew’s escape from Kamino and manages to retrieve important ship parts from a small dragon’s dungeon, all alone.
Personality:
“She is my medical assistant. One with a curious mind that causes her to wander.”
Nala Se
Omega displays childish hope and empathy towards everyone. However, she has a curious mind and wanders off on her own with no regard for her personal safety.
She is also the kind to get in trouble fast and bad. She isn’t afraid to pick fights against bullies, no matter how scary or intimidating they seem. She stands up for herself and her friends.
Omega looks up to Hunter and often copies his mannerisms like a baby chick imprinting on their parent. Father-daughter-duo of the year, I’m telling you.
