Babylon 5 actress Mira Furlan passed away on January 20th, 2021, at 65 years of age. Her official Twitter page announced the news first. Later, Babylon 5 creator J Michael Straczynski confirmed the news with a tweet. The actress’s family has revealed that she was suffering from the West Nile virus during the time of her death.
Mira Furlan was born in Croatia and was heavily involved in the Croatian theatre circuit. She was a part of the film When Father Was Away on Business, which was nominated in the Best Foreign Language film category in the Oscars. She later emigrated to the USA during the Yugoslavian Civil War.
One of Furlan’s most popular roles in recent times is in the ABC drama series, Lost. She played Danielle Rousseau, a scientist who was shipwrecked on the island sixteen years before the crash of Oceanic Flight 815. Her last role was in the fantasy series Just Add Magic.
In Babylon 5, the actress played Delenn, the Minbari ambassador to the space station of Babylon 5. J Michael Straczynski wrote that Furlan’s acquaintances knew that her health was failing for some time.
Furlan’ family has written in their statement- “We will all continue to celebrate her life and legacy, and know she’ll always be there with us,”
She is survived by her husband, Goran Gajic, and son, Marko Lav Gajic.
