It took the creators of Top Gun thirty years to give us a sequel, but considering the level of success it enjoyed and the nostalgia it blessed us with, we all think it was worth it. Another classic watch from the 80s, Dirty Dancing, is due for a sequel after over three decades, but an official release date has yet to be confirmed.
Dirty Dancing star Jennifer Grey officially announced a script was in the works for a sequel in August 2022 and even shared some details from the long-awaited second instalment. And even though her dancing partner Patrick Swayze won’t be able to join due to his untimely death in 2009, Grey is committed to making a “perfect” sequel.
In an interview with Good Morning America, Grey opened up about why the sequel has taken so long to be delivered, citing she wants the sequel to be perfect to honor Swayze and the fans of the original. You can find her interview below, along with her quote transcribed under it:
We’re not giving up any dates at the moment because… really, what I’m doing, my whole job with this, is to get it right, get it really right, in Patrick’s honor, in honor of all of the fans’ relationship with the movie. If you’re going to do that movie again, it has to be right. It’s definitely happening. I’m very excited to say that. It’s something I refuse to do unless it’s perfect, so I’m doing my very best to make sure we honor it.

Grey’s comments and active involvement in the sequel gives hope to fans of the classic film that though the sequel is long overdue, it will not disappoint. Her commitment towards keeping the original magic alive and her sentiment of honoring Swayze will carry her and the project through towards a perfect sequel.
The details of the film are thin, but according to previous statements from Baby, production was supposed to start around this time. With this new update and the reluctance to share a stable release date, we can confirm that production stands delayed, but we can still expect the film sometime in 2024.
Hopefully, Dirty Dancing 2 can match the same nostalgic magic Top Gun: maverick produced for its predecessor and bring back the 80s rom com feel to the cinemas again.
