Sigourney Weaver has cleared the air on Avatar 3’s filming progress after two key creative team members hinted at some delays.
The third installment of James Cameron’s epic saga follows the adventures of the Sully family in the alien world of Pandora. The movie was shot back-to-back with the highly anticipated sequel, The Way of Water, which won the prestigious Oscar.
However, fans have been left in the dark about the status of Avatar 3 for a while now, as it switched from Fox to Disney under the 20th Century Studios banner.
In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant for her new psychological thriller Master Gardener, Sigourney Weaver revealed some news about Avatar 3.
She explained the conflicting reports from Cameron and her co-star Zoe Saldaña about the filming status of the movie, saying that they will do some more shooting in the next year, but it won’t be “entirely new scenes.” Here’s what Weaver said:

Fans of Avatar 3 have been confused about how far along the movie is in meeting its 2024 release date due to conflicting updates from Cameron and Saldaña.
The former said as early as 2020 that the next movie was “95 percent done”, with filming reported to be finished in December of that year. However, the latter claimed just this March that the production was only “70 percent” completed.
Weaver’s update seems to explain that Avatar 3 is somewhere in the middle of those two numbers, with some extra work required before more filming next year.
While Saldaña’s earlier comments suggested filming would resume this summer, the ongoing WGA writers’ strike is likely affecting this since Cameron is also a writer.
Therefore, any additional development in the WGA strike will also affect the future shooting dates of Avatar 3.
However, This delay makes one wonder if Avatar 3 will have to push back its release date due to the remaining production work on the movie.
Considering the number of visual effects that go into Cameron’s movies, any extra CGI work will surely add to the time needed to make the threequel.
Avatar 3 may still have some filming left, but Weaver’s update assures fans that the movie is on track and will deliver another amazing chapter in the Sully family’s story.
With Cameron’s vision and passion behind the camera and a talented cast and crew in front of it, Avatar 3 will surely be worth the wait.
