Although Avatar’s massive success in 2009 had paved way for a sequel (and perhaps even a series), it has taken more than a decade for it to come to fruition. Now Avatar: The Way of Water is set to hit the silver screens in December and we can’t wait to dig into the new chapter of this story.
But first, let’s look into which cast and characters will be part of the franchise.
Jake and Neytiri, along with their kids, will continue being the central characters in Avatar: The Way of Water. Stephen Lang will return as the antagonist in a new Colonel Miles Quaritch. Sigourney Weaver, Cliff Curtis, and Kate Winslet are also part of the cast.
Characters are a huge driving force for any movie. So, while we still don’t know much about the plot of Avatar 2, here’s what you can expect from the characters.
1. Jake, Neytiri, and Their Family
Avatar 2 will continue Jake and Neytiri’s story, so expect to see Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldaña reprise their roles. Time has clearly passed since the last time we saw them, and the two have three biological children now.
They also have adopted a human son called Javier Socorro, who was rescued from Hell’s Gate. He has earned the nickname “Spider,” for learning to imitate the Na’vi’s movements. It seems like he has an important role to play, especially if we get some new human trouble over the inter-tribal conflict that the movie teases.
In the sequel, Jake and his family are forced to leave the rainforest due to some ecological problems. Given that the movie’s tagline is “Family is our Fortress,” I believe that they will solve various problems through their familial dynamics.
2. Sigourney Weaver as Kiri
There are a few actors you may have not expected to return, and Sigourney Weaver is among them. Her character, Dr. Grace Augustine, passed away in the first movie. So, in what capacity is she returning?
Weaver will play Kiri, another kid that Jake and Neytiri adopt. She is Na’vi, so it will be interesting to see under what circumstances they adopt her. Weaver returning means that Kiri will also be pivotal to the plot.
3. Colonel Miles Quaritch
Colonel Miles Quaritch may have died at the end of Avatar, but he’s not going to let a silly thing like death stop him from causing chaos in Pandora. The character returns (with Stephen Lang reprising the role) in the new form of a Recombinant, who is a Na’vi Avatar embedded with the memories of a soldier.
It is possible that he will retain all the memories of his previous life, which is why he still nurses a hatred toward Jake.
4. Metkayina Tribe
Avatar: The Way of Water will introduce us to a whole new tribe, the Metkayinas. The Metkayina tribe live near the reefs, have a lifestyle that is dependable on water, and are compatible with sea creatures. Playing the tribe’s leader is Cliff Curtis.
Besides Curtis, Kate Winslet is also part of the Metkayina tribe as the free diver Ronal. In the trailer, she seems to be performing an elaborate ritual underwater.
