3. Episode 88 Recap
The episode begins with Halil and Ramzi, two refugees, hiding money. As they are discussing all these things, they see that all the people of Marley are running away from the town, and as they look behind them, they see titans walking toward them and destroying everything.
After that, we get a flashback of Eren walking on the streets of Marley and talking to himself about killing all the people in the town in the future. As he is questioning himself, he asks himself what his mother would think about all the massacres that Eren is causing.
As Eren is wandering the streets of Marley, he sees some old people beating Ramzi, and he knows that in the future, he will end up saving the kid. Eren fights his desire to save the kid as he knows the rumbling will kill him anyways. Yet, he finally gives in, and the kid is spared.
Eren then asks for forgiveness from Ramzi and tells him that he needs to do it for the sake of the Eldians. Then we cut to present day and see the horrifying reality of titans killing all the people in town. Ramzi is also caught up in the actions and dies under the feet of the titans.
We then see Armin getting a vision of kid Eren in the world of paths, but it is interrupted by Annie, and both talk about the present situation. We also see Annie recognize that Armin has feelings for her. At night, everyone works on making the flying boat (airplane) work.
While everyone is working, Mikasa tells Annie to practice and get used to the new ODM gear, but she refuses and tells Mikasa that she doesn’t fit in anymore and that she wants to enjoy the little time left. Mikasa also realizes that Annie loves Armin and that it’s okay if she doesn’t want to fight anymore.
Furthermore, Levi wakes up from his injuries and goes to Yelena to ask where Eren is going exactly. His second target is to reach Fort Salta, where they have the firepower to have a chance against the titans. In the morning, as everyone is working on the flying boat, they see that the titans are close and there is still some work to do to make it fly.
To buy some time, Hange decides to go solo between the titans, but before doing so, she makes Armin the 15th commander of the Scout Regiment. As Hange begins to wreak havoc among the titans, making them slow and killing them to buy them enough time to escape, she manages to do it, but in the end, she starts to burn from the explosions and dies a heroic death.
In the next scene, we see everyone talking about how to defeat Eren, and they conclude that Armin has the potential to blow up the whole thing with his titan, but it will be their last resort if they can’t talk with Eren. Also, another way to stop the rumbling is by killing Zeke. Levi decides to follow Hange’s hunch that the founding titan needs to be taken out to stop the rumbling.
As everyone is discussing, they are all pulled to the world of paths, where Armin and Mikasa try to talk with Eren, but he says that the only way to stop him is if they can make him draw his last breath. Everyone seems devastated, as there is no way but to fight Eren.
Meanwhile, we see the people taking shelter in Fort Salta. The last remaining military begins an air raid, putting all their hope in those explosives to stop the rumbling, but as they drop them, some of the titans collapse. However, the Beast titan wipes away every airship, and everything seems hopeless. The Survey Corps drops from the flying boat and starts to target the beast titan.
At the end of the hour-long episode, Armin is standing on the founding titan and tells Eren that once it ends, he is going to ask him in what way he is free.
